Our firm is growing fast and we need to add another attorney to keep up with the work. Our compensation package is 20-30% higher than what others firms in our area are offering. However, I’m still finding it difficult to get qualified associate to even apply for the position. I think part of the problem may be because we are located in a mid-sized city rather than a major metro area. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to attract talent when you are a newer small firm in a mid-size market?

Contact your local public service firm if there is one that does your area of law. See if they have anyone qualified in mind who is looking for work.

Volunteer attorneys at these places learn so much there in a quick amount of time because of the fast pace and volume of cases coming in.

Perhaps you could look for "Open to Work" attorneys or attorneys in your area on LinkedIn and reach out to leads there.

How much are you offering?

We offer associates 35% of every hour they bill/we collect plus a end of year bonus that is dependent on how the firm did overall that year.

What city?

Thoughts...10+ years practical/management experience in/around legal field in FL (includes state government, in-house non-profit, civil practice, etc.). Two years ago took a job to relocate closer to where I want to be...but not sure if being valued and compensated appropriately. It’s a smaller firm, salary $75k, not too much in way of bonuses so maybe $5k, but always step up to plate with assisting management as leader for operational contributions and I meet annual revenue goals around $300k.

How normal is it to be pulled off a trial team because you tell your boss you are moving after trial? I have a trial coming up first week of Oct. This case has been my baby, and I’m going to try it with my boss. I tell my boss up front that, for family reasons, I’ve gotten a new job and will be moving to another city two weeks after trial will likely end. So I just accidentally found out that the senior associate in our office makes almost 3x the amount I do per month. For background, we have 4 attorneys, the senior associate has about 9 years more experience than I do (I have 6). This person should be paid more than me, I have no problem with that. Is it normal for there to be that big of a difference in pay? I just want to know if I’m getting screwed.

I now have a potential client who is ready to litigate a dispute in different area of the law (a simple tort matter). My partners aren’t keen on taking case as it’s outside the firm’s practice area. Aside from having this potential client pay a large retainer, is there anyway to convince/persuade my partners to allow me to take this case?

Does anyone else put everything even rent on their credit card to help with cash flow? Most of my clients are net 30 so I may not get paid for 30-40 days after I bill them.
