That would be a hard no - what level is your lead? I would hope if this was an engagement I was part of a team member would bring this to my attention, as it would be reversed immediately
I would bring it up in the meeting.
Agree that anything after 4pm on a Friday is bad but at a minimum make it clear that 6PM is a very hard stop for everyone if there is not an emergency.
And obviously if there is an emergency they should try to tackle it before the end of the work week.
Honestly if you reply all with a polite message that says something to the effect of “how about we switch to X instead of a Friday pm meeting” you will only make friends.

Yeah, no. Decline, citing personal conflicts at that time.
There are certainly nice ways to handle this. But I’m with the “F this noise” crowd; let me go, I was looking for a job when I got this one and now I’ll find another.

That is some straight bullshxt! Nobody should be scheduling a recurring internal meeting at 5pm on a Friday. Everyone should decline or start proposing new times.
I try not to schedule anything after noon on Fridays — let alone a recurring meeting. I cannot even imagine a reason for this, let alone a good reason.
We’ve had “no meeting Fridays” for several months now and it’s pretty great. Meetings do slip in, as that’s just life at the leadership level, but for the most part we have that time to get “real” work done and to decompress from what’s always a busy week. My buddy at SAP calls them “f*ck off Fridays”, and he may have a point, but it’s been a big morale booster in a difficult time
Only reason I could imagine this being acceptable is if you are in an entirely different time zone than the rest of the team and are expected to keep their hours. Otherwise this is absurd and I would decline the meetings and propose alternate times.

Several hours!? That’s a no for me, dawg.
They sound like they’d be really popular 💀
5pm meeting on Friday? For the love of god. That ain’t right
Oh no, this won't do. I would decline.

Just say, “F no!”

Nah - I’m leaving that company asap. Major red flags.
That’s crazy and inconsiderate - even if you were to ignore that it’s a Friday, assuming normal business hours end at 6pm it’s an inappropriate time to schedule a meeting that is usually “several hours.” Is there a difference in time zone or any other extenuating circumstances? Could you suggest moving the meeting to earlier since it seems to need more than 30 min? I wouldn’t mention it being EOD Friday as a problem, but since it has a track record of running long there may be a tactful way to suggest holding it earlier
I think the different time zones excuse only works for one accidental schedule. Having seen this before I can tell you that several managers do schedule meetings at that time for a variety of reasons:
1. Power play: The "period is over when I say it is over not when the bell rings" mentality
2. That slot is usually open across a large team because - surprise! - people don't schedule meetings on Fridays at 5 PM
3. A misguided notion that people are relaxed and open to discussion close to the weekend. IMO a meeting is a surefire way of ruining that mindset forever
Lots of red flags here…
5pm Friday meetings = lack of respect for everyone’s time 🚩
Scheduled for 30, lasts several hours = poor management, no agenda, no clear outcome 🚩
Nothing gets accomplished = no reason for the meeting in the first place 🚩
As others suggested, I’d try to gently nudge this person to realize the error in judgement. Hopefully you can get through, but if not it seems like you have many signals of poor management and leadership, and a good nudge for yourself to consider your next moves.
Good luck, OP
THIS! I was scrolling and scrolling to find the post that calls out that this bad management, based on the fact that the meeting chronically runs over by HOURS. I can accept running over by 30 minutes max if it is super important, but hours? This manager is not only out of touch and likely doesn't have a satisfying personal life, but they also appear to be way out of their league as a manager and do not understand how to properly structure/lead a meeting to be focused and productive.

Lol. I’d just resign.
On a serious note, talk to your peers and raise this concern with your lead. I’m sure you’re not the only one who has an issue with it.

We need an update OP! Are you going to attend tomorrow at 5pm?
We must know!!
Is the scheduling person in PST and you are in EST? Very likely an oversight.
I’m a strong believer in not having to excuse your personal life. Decline the invite and ask them to reschedule for Friday morning or Thursday BEFORE 5 PM.
What do you even talk about in the meetings that takes several hours on Friday evening?
I’m in a practice that regularly puts 80+ hour weeks in, and I can honestly say that any Partner I’ve worked with would NOT be okay with this. Where does a Senior get off acting like this?
People who schedule Friday evening meetings hate their own personal lives. Sad little people.
I would literally quit
