Hey @cd1 - I listed none of those things as reasons for my concerns or issues. Tbh, your response is fucked up and I sincerely hope we never cross paths.

like

@CD1 - so agencies aren’t fearless because they’re afraid to make eye contact with women? Is your agency Mike Pence?

likeupliftinghelpfulfunny

For us it’s losing clients, not winning new business, laying people off, and a leadership team that lacks direction and inspiration

like

What I take from CD1's comment is that to be "bold and fearless", we must go back to the hetero, male-driven culture of advertising. I think you might wanna eat those words. @VP, I'm genuinely sorry you're feeling like that. As a more junior level person, I do look up to people at your level. If you're not happy and you feel you've done all you can to try to create a change, then don't beat yourself up for a choice that will make you happier. A great leader and role model is most inspiring when they're at a place where they can thrive.

likeupliftingsmart

So weird how women are ruining business culture by being around and wanting to be treated as equal to their male counterparts.

So.... Your saying your agency is hiring?

Don’t be ridiculous. It’s a legit observation that in the past year group clusters have been forming and when investigated, a common theme has been ‘we don’t want to be accused of something absurd or get taken out of context’. This is one of many things that has contributed to a toxic work environment. A lack of trust and camaraderie. Note how many posts are about ‘bro culture’ or ‘mansplaining.’ Sorry if this is an uncomfortable truth for some.

likesmartfunny

@CD1 - if most of your comments start by telling people “don’t be ridiculous” then I hate to tell you, that’s mansplaining, bruh. Lecturing anyone about the causes of toxic work environment but nullifying the role hetero/male culture might play in it is ridiculous. Go build a time machine and go back to when people listened to overpaid creative white mean. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Are you my VP?

like

@grey 1 same story here. Moved offices (physical location) and lost all sense of culture. Not winning new biz bc we refuse to change the way we approach things - even if we get feedback from potential clients saying what went wrong. Senior leaders either don’t care or care but don’t know how to fix things, so it seems like we have all given up

like

CD1 we have 11 C-level employees in our office and only 2 are women and they are both very qualified. Just going back to the data.

like

@CD1 I’m a non-white female and I agree with your perspective. I am NOT saying there is not a huge fucking problem in this industry when it comes to EQUALITY. But my problem is when people assume feminism means manhating. That’s not how we achieve equality. Which is what feminism is all about. I also find it Incredibly disturbing that so many people are jumping on this not in sincere form, but as a PR stunt, and that’s just as disgusting as allowing shit to happen and throwing it under the rug. There are fundamental issues with our industry (as I’m sure is the case in many others too) but a trendy instagram post or promoting one high profile employee to check the box isn’t the solution. There’s racism, gender discrimination, ageism, the endless creative vs everyone else, and ridiculous hierarchical bullshit (while I respect those who have more experience than me, I don’t think your experience defines your worth.)

like

I suppose CD here assumed that before the millennial feminism there was no such thing as toxic work environment. Great argument, mate. Curious discussion, though. Question to OP: there's usually some people that are responsible for the toxicity of the place. They're definitely a root to it. Have you ever tried to out the people? Maybe it's like the CD above. Maybe have some drinks with the creatives? They'll tell you after a few.

Enough about the “official office culture.” That’s boring. Sup with the “unofficial office culture”?

like

@freelance - I’m trying! But it’s hard for me to stay motivated and want to be here too. Lots of different reasons why it’s challenging, but mostly I’d say that it comes down to not feeling pride or passion for the work we do. Hard to feel proud of the work when we keep missing the mark in new biz so we end up having to work on “eh” stuff.

like

Go on...

Interested in how you think it became so toxic. What would you do over again?

like

OP I am curious, if you are senior leadership how come you don't have the ability to influence the culture? You must have better ideas but what are the roadblocks.

likesmart

watershed stream right here. time we as part of the ‘industry’ faced up to this. @VP OP: love your honesty. it’s strangely reassuring to know senior leadership also know it’s all broken and are in the same place. I would stand behind the ones that finally stand up publicly tell the industry it’s alright to admit it’s broke so we can fix it together as equals.

I am looking to gain certification or other credentialing in diversity and inclusion, not only because it would look good on my resume both for future job-search purposes and also to become better educated in this area, which is growing in importance. I looked at SHRM's "Inclusive Workplace Culture Specialty Credential" and got a bit of "sticker shock" at the cost - $1,655.00 for members. Does anyone have other suggestions on training/credentialing in this area?

Marriage or promotion 😞 I’m on track to make partner at my company. Due to the audit services we sell, we have to disclose all financial relationships, including those of our SOs. I’m engaged to a private investor, and there is no way he is going to disclose/sell investments because my company tells him to (I don’t blame him; I wouldn’t do this, in his position, either). This means I have to quit if I want to marry him 😞 Anyone else experience this kind of compromise / challenge? Any advice?
