Our union voted for teachers performing mid coverage 2 times a week for free during our plan period!! Every morning I have to open my email and pray that I do t have to give free labor today. Sometimes I called 5 minutes before that class starts. We are in the process of negotiating a new contract for a the fall. So, my free labor has saved the district $500 since august. Now, times that by 80 teachers in our building… our building had saved them 40,000$$$$$$$
Is someone getting a “kickback”?
That sounds illegal…
🤔 Wondering what would happen if a large % of staff woke up on the same morning too sick to do anything other than notifying the principal they are too sick to work? On a Friday, no less. (Cough, cough)🤔

Soooo basically your contract states you have sick or personal days available to take, but you can't actually take a sick or personal day? Hmmm
Take it to your union rep. She CANNOT do that.
Ummm... I think your principal might have magical healing powers... maybe she can make covid go away...
File a grievance. Every single time. And get as many on staff as possible to do the same.
I was at a private school in VA that had to do this. When they started calling me on maternity leave, 2 days after birth, I called a lawyer.

Do you have a union?
That’s crazy!
Report her
How is that even legal?
So does that mean you won’t get paid if your sick leave is not approved?
How did it become Educators responsibility to find their own substitute?
I do have specific substitutes that I can contact but sometimes they are already booked for a job. So I put in a request and if no one shows up they pull support staff to cover.
We get paid for sick leave, but not mod coverage. The union was involved in the negotiations and brought the contract (2 unpaid mid coverage days). To the teachers to vote on. The contract passed by 67 votes.

Your principal is incorrect. She may want you to have a sub, but all you can do is call off and alert your sub pool. It’s not your problem if they don’t have enough subs. We are all feeling the shortage of subs. Most district, including mine, have a set number of sick days they give per year. Those sick days are mine to use if I need them regardless of the sub shortage. You need to meet with a union rep, then have the building rep speak with your principal.
It’s absolutely ridiculous of her to think that an employee wakes up sick and puking, but has to come in unless she has a sub. That’s stupid on its face. Is she saying that you should come in sick only to infect other people? Perhaps it’s time for several teachers to call off sick one day. She’ll have to deal with it then…now what?
Contact union!!!

We had to do that in TN. There was a list of subs, and you had to call through them yourself to find someone.

I teach in the Pittsburgh area.
When I very first started teaching I had to find my own sub. I went to school no matter what!

Why don’t you go and discuss this with her? 1 on 1 and find out if she understands the issue with this. It’s more likely to get you a solution.

She’s a Moron. When I’m out I’m out. She can figure out what to do. That’s her job.
PLEASE - get your union involved!!
