Even I was surprised. We have 5 continents covered. No Australia yet and obviously no Antarctica 😉

That’s amazing! We have the flags of all of our families hanging up in the lobby of our building. We have over 30 countries recognized!

What do you mean when you say “diverse”? Curious, because I find this to be a wide coverage term. My school is ~70/30 Hispanic/Anglo, with a very few Black and Southeast Asian. Second most diverse county in OK, but most think our area is super white if they don’t know better.

Oklahoma, I alway laugh when my district talks about how diverse we are. We are African American and white., about 50/50. I came from an immigrant town where there were 17 languages spoken among the students when I left. There isn’t a large majority of any group. That’s diverse.

That is awesome! It sure stimulates than looking at a boring plain classroom. I remember one of my History teachers had old model airplanes hanging from his ceiling and old maps. Old cameras and typewriters- he would tell us a story about his “treasures” and everyone would pay attention. The flags are beautiful!!!!

So neat, but I am curious if many didn’t know. I don’t know my background so neither do my children.

There were kids that did not know. Most of them said they would try to find out, if there were also a few that just didn’t care, as is the case with middle schoolers.

So... what happens with kids who don't know their family origins because their family history involves slavery? Not trying to be a downer, just wondering what they do when everyone else shares their origins?

Totally fair question. I did address that in a vague way before we started. We talked about how some people don’t know their family origins for any number of reasons and that, that was ok. I did not address the issues of lost history due to slavery directly because based on conversations with the students that I have specifically I knew that was not the case, but I was an am prepared to discuss it if it is brought up. Valid question for sure though, thanks for asking.

This is a really cool validation and affirmation of your kids' various cultures. Good job!

Just out of curiosity, what or how would you like your district to embrace the diverse population?

I think the #1 thing would be to hire a more diverse staff. I know that is easier said than done, but our community is about 50% white, but our employees are probably 95% white. Other ideas would be to just embrace and recognize our different cultures. Our buildings are very bland and uninspiring as far as decorations go. We celebrate typical days like St. Patrick’s Day, etc. but we miss out on a lot of the recognition of celebrations from other cultures. I know it’s a difficult thing to address fully and I don’t know that I have all the answers either, but I do know that we can do more and that is why I started with something small within my own classroom.

Kudos! Offering to see if there is room for them to share pieces of themselves to add to the classroom identities? Like student advocacy on their part? This is great!!

LOVE this

Great idea and it actually makes your classroom look great!!

Where's the Rampant Lion and/or St. Andrews Cross? (Scotland!)

No students from there, but if I get one in the future I will add it. I figure I have room for about 7 or 8 more without having to get too creative on space.

Love it- creative, educational, thought provoking, discussion making!

How do I respond to an observation score of a II in an area where I feel the score was unwarranted? I scored III in all other areas. The score was a II because I had students working on Google Classroom & was finishing up emails before I transitioned into the classroom reading. It’s the week before midterms, and I have duty for 20 minutes of my 50-minute planning period in 1st.
