Happy Friday! 🤣
Happy 4th of July!!! How are you celebrating today?
Does anyone else get the "summer time blues "?

It's not "civil disobedience" to endanger others for no valid reason.
That's called "callous selfishness," and it appalls me that teachers on here are supporting it.
What good or cause are these students promoting? Or, what mistreatment are they protesting?
Wearing masks does no harm to anyone.
Not wearing masks DOES cause harm.
It's that simple.
Our school has plastic dividers between very desk and a wall of plexiglass around the teachers’ desks where we have to teach from since we also do DL. Students are 6-8’ apart in addition. Yet everyone still has to keep masks on.
As a geneticist and science teacher, it is just terrifying to me how ignorant so many teachers appear to be. Science is not political. I respect the ability of English teachers to have a far better grasp of the subtleties of language than I do. History teachers understand historical events with great complexity and years of study that I could never hope to master. But it is truly extraordinary to me that people who have, at best, a lower level college science education think they know better than physicians and scientists who have lifetimes of experience. The scientific evidence that masks work and that vaccines work and aren't dangerous (or experimental) is irrefutable. As Neil deGrasse Tyson said, "The great thing about science is it's true whether or not you believe in it".
Uh, there are many of your kind on the other side of this coin which makes it extremely difficult to know who is right and who is not. Just saying.
Right because it’s not like we’re still in a nationwide deadly pandemic or anything. 🙄

Yeah, I saw that story. Josh Hawley wants to investigate Fauci and his emails… Just further proof that the GIP has zero awareness of the concepts of irony or shame.
I hope that when my daughter is old enough to participate in such actions, she will be strong enough to fight for social justice, compassionate enough to put the safety and well-being of others over her own inconvenience, and wise enough to know the difference.
As someone with three risk factors AND an ready high risk pregnancy, I would not allow a mask less student into my room. Period. I am super thankful that my district enforces the mask rule across the board.
I agree with you completely. I have an autoimmune illness and take immunosuppressant medicine to manage my condition. I’m also single & self supporting, which means people’s flippant comments about disability are very painful. Teaching has been my only career for 30 years and frankly, I’m damn good at it. . I’m vaccinated, but there’s not enough research yet to know if immunosuppressant meds lower the vaccine’s effectiveness. So, I plan to wear a mask, hand sanitize a lot, and am very glad my state will require students to wear a mask or go home. Forgive me for believing that I’m a valuable person and teacher even with imperfect health.
Two things—about the issue in general-
1) Covid is very very real. It’s not a game.
One of my former students—her mother got Covid, gave it to her, she gave it to her husband and her daughter. Her mother and husband were in the ICU for a month. No way can they pay all the medical bills. Meanwhile in Mexico, her uncle and father in law both died of Covid.
Another teacher friend had Covid, ill for weeks, exhausted and had a foggy mind for 5 months. But she was glad to live bc the cafetería worker at her school died of it.
Covid took the life of a good friend’s father.
Another friend was sick with Covid for weeks, had violent migraines with it, food tasted like ashes for a month.
My church lost members of our sister church in Mexico. Several members lost their entire families.
2) This is a national crisis. Unity to defeat the disease instead of selfishness would save lives. I couldn’t see my mom for 15 months because her assisted living locked down. We FaceTimed, talked on the phone daily. Is a mask such a big deal, really? To protect someone fragile? To be able to reopen schools safely? Our school was closed for 15 months. If masks allow us back to school without unnecessarily endangering our staff and students and their families, why not just wear the darn masks? My students are not wealthy. Frequently families share homes and apartments. 6-8 people in a 2 or 3 bedroom home makes Covid spread fast. Most of my students live in multigenerational households with babies, young kids and elderly relatives. Care about them.
Well, I’ve written a lot. If you read to the end thank you. It’s been a very very hard year. I’m not comfortable about going back, but distance learning was not a success for most students (even though my colleagues and I did our very best), so if masks mean a safer return, so be it.

Sometimes it takes a child to see the truth.
I love the insinuation by some that you aren’t a good educator if you don’t follow or believe in the mask mandates.
I’m not opposed! We teach our students to be leaders and follow through. Yes it may rock the boat but isn’t that what happens throughout history. You may not agree but who are we to muzzle our youth for something they care about. This 🙋🏽♂️teacher applaud their efforts❤️

PHS: You scared? Wear a seatbelt in the car. Not scared? Don't.
You care about other people besides yourself? Wear a mask, get vaccinated. You're a selfish jerk? Break the law.
You're right, it shouldn't have ever been a conflict; unfortunately, ignorant and selfish people like yourself made it one.
Imagine if in London during the blitzkrieg, British citizens had been all, "It's my choice whether I turn off my lights or not."
Wear a mask. It's a tiny ask with huge benefits. Honor others' health and safety over your comfort and convenience.
Kids? Go ahead and protest. But be prepared to miss even more school.
Tex MS 1 - um hmm...that's exactly the same thing lol
Good for those kids! That's awesome. I wish my students would do that.
Really? You wish more students would recklessly endanger the lives of others? This is a public health issue.
After the Parkland, FL, school shooting, our students wanted to have a demonstration to support mental health awareness and gun control. They were not allowed to, but some did anyway, and I was proud of them. All they did was stage a 10-minute walk-out which harmed no one. I applaud students who take a stand, but they need to know which issues are worth fighting for. We are still in a pandemic. Masks help. I would be embarrassed if my students were so anti-science that they protested against masks.
What does the Constitution say about the causes??
Chief
I’m all for students exercising their right to protest. I don’t agree with these particular students, but I definitely support their right to be heard.
I also support the right of the school to give consequences for those that walk out of class. If the kids really believe in their cause, they’ll happily accept their punishment.
Side note- the OP says these students are citing research that shows masks are more harmful than helpful for kids. I’d also suggest that the school follow up the protest with a research lesson. I’m quite certain the study they’re citing is crap.
A matter of habit to not wear a mask around someone near 100?
At this point in the game, I say go for it. Look at Florida, they've done away with the mask mandates, opened everything up, and they're fine...the main stream media loves to control people through fear.
If we were really that bad in the pandemic, then why are they allowing thousands of people to cross the boarder, without being tested, and cramming them into tiny areas, which could potentially be a super spreader event? Answer: because they don't care about you, only potential votes...
You are not living in reality. The faux media (Fox, NewsMax , OAN) love to be against science and reality. Oh, and border is spelled without the “a” in the context you were using.
We’ve had a couple students die from Covid, this would not go over well by us. Luckily we have a remote option for students so they can just stay home for the rest of the year.
Ill HS 1 - that is so sad. What school is that?
And the children shall lead.
You know, I don't enjoy the mask either, but the protest is exactly what is wrong with kids today. Don't like something? Throw a hissy and get your parents to back you instead of just doing what is asked.
Kids plan things like this to revolt a dress code a few times a year and all they're doing is setting a bad example. This mask has kept us healthier and IN PERSON all but 3 two week stretches this entire year. We have had our sports and our banquets and plan on having a graduation. There is a time to stand up for yourselves if you are being mistreated but I am not sure why anyone feels that the students should be applauded for any kind of disobedience.
All of the people mentioned were fully informed adults except for the kids in the plan. They do not know what is unjust or legal. You can teach at a school where kids make the rules but, I will pass...It's too close to that now. This is better handled by parents. By the way, all parties that you mentioned were punished for their disobedience. I agree with the kids but they should not be making this decision imo.
To teach your Students to stand up against oppressions that life may throw at them through Racial, Social, Economical, or other factors is a good thing. Then in the same breath Shamming these same Students for doing exactly that, Standing up against their perceived oppressors School Admin, Local, State, and Federal Governments; you have just become a Hypocrite.
More power to these Students that choose to push their boundaries within the Constitution. It is their Right to do so. It is also their Right to suffer the full weight of the consequences. I hope they are successful in this matter, It is high time for some Positive Change today rather than all the negative.
I've never "shammed" a student for asking a question or objecting to something that seemed unfair.
I draw the line at student protests which endanger them and other people, however.
I applaud them also. I hate masks but wear them if a place requires them. However, where I live, everything is basicly back to normal. There are still places that require masks but very few. As far as covid cases, we barely have any. The hospital in my town has 0 cases and the surrounding areas have 5-10 cases each. In total, there are less than 30 hospitalized patients. Of course there are at-home cases, but that number is lower also. Our system has been in school since September and we have not had to close. If a student gets covid or comes in contact with someone, they are quarentined. The students at our middle and high school have not worn masks all year. They were told to, but very few listened and the teachers and admin don't make a big deal out of it. The students in the primary and elementary school have done better at wearing masks. But in the last month, we've started letting them relax and not requiring them to wear masks if they don't want to. I realize many people are still worried about covid, but that is why virtual learning is offered.
As far as our community, very few businesses require masks. If a business does require masks, people wear them or don't go. It's a respect thing. However, respect goes both ways. When everyone was mandated to wear masks, there was a lot more backlash.
Going on week 2 of no masks in my district. Woohoo!!!
They should all be suspended. Full stop.
Masks suck, but they can lower transmission rate by 70%, 90+% if you wear N95 or double mask.
It’s about time we teach our students that we are also responsible to society as a whole.
N95 masks protect only the wearer from inhaling something 'bad.' They release everything from the wearer into the environment, thus protecting no one from anything the wearer may have. May as well be maskless.

I've had three kids contact me TODAY to tell me they were out with Covid, with a 4th due back tomorrow. Keep in mind, that is just this week.
The idiocy of students dreaming this up is not surprising in the least. Nor does it surprise me that there is a faction of selfish, infantile brats within the profession.
I am heartened by students who are responsible. I am reassured by educators who are informed.
Chief
To clarify, idiocy is recognizing injustice and seeking to correct it?
Supporting students who are exercising their own decision making process to stand up for something they feel is important to them (in a peaceful manner) makes a teacher an “infantile brat”?
Our thoughts and opinions on this matter differ, so one of us must be an antagonist?
Are these the statements you’re making?
