You do remember that this is how businesses were ran pre-pandemic, right? If you have kids then figure that out, and understand that it’s not the company’s job to help remediate your personal situation. At the end of the day, it is a business.

Pre pandemic we had Friday WFH and could take sick days if we needed it. Now we must work on sick days since we are understaffed due to the hiring market and work the 2 extra hours saved during Covid from commuting but recently we resume commuting. Business will always seek to exploit the employee, esp the productive ones.

Your VP is a douche and you should immediately start looking elsewhere. WFH should be allowed by law because of the substantial benefits it provides to employees. It may be forced attrition, it may be forced demands from a greedy PE Owner who is losing money on real estate and also invests in your company, it may be simply selfish upper management. Either way, it sounds like it’s time to “quiet quit” and jump ship

"Allowed by law"? Really? How exactly would that work? Who decides what jobs can be WFH and what cant? Oh wait, you are a consultant and will no doubt sell Deloitte's services to the government as an outside authority on what can and cannot be done remotely......
As long as we are making laws, we should make hiring consultants against the law for government agencies. Spending public funds on people so stupid they advocated mandatory WFH is clearly fraud, waste and abuse.

Prior to COVID we were told to be in the office 5 days a week....but there was an unspoken agreement that we could WFH on a one off time if something came up (ie kid sick home from school, contractors working on your home, delivery of something big and expensive that required someone to be home). I get that managers want people in office but not allowing for the one off issues is going to leave a bad taste in people's mouths
Agreed - 5 days in the office is a bit much as it is but to not even allow WFH if something comes up just seems spiteful
My hands were tied on this one OP
@deloitte1 - Forcing employers to operate their business by law is a very dangerous precedent. Employment is voluntary on both sides.
I agree that a legal requirement would be overreach. That said I think that unless a job materially demands a physical presence the arbitrary requirement is a red flag at this point in time.

Our company encourages coming in from time to time but, at least in my Business Unit (BU), there is no requirement to be in office X number of days.
There are plenty of companies out there embracing WFH. I agree with the above comments that it’s time to jump ship; they either don’t care about their employees or they are trying to get a certain number of people to quit.

This is exactly the backlash we could have expected. There are people who take advantage of the flexibility of wfh. And managers can’t treat people differently…so because Jimmy’s never in the office and his reports can’t get him on the phone bc he’s at the gym or taking a nap or has a second job during work hours, the boss says “nope, everyone in every day.”
Blame Jimmy as much as the boss. We see people like Jimmy on here every day talking about doing 2 jobs and all the time they get to walk their dogs midday. That abuse of the trust means you have to get approved PTO to take your kid to the dentist. Which sucks.

Meanwhile it’s much easier to squish the good workers
What does having children have to do with WFH? Why shouldn’t WFH be the default for everyone because it’s better for the environment, it’s more efficient, and it reduces toxic office dynamics?
People can multitask, G1. Maybe you can’t, but we can
Time to look for a new job. That's ridiculous
Time to find new employment. It’s a new day in these streets.

Seems unrealistic. I suspect if you said you had to stay home to meet a furniture delivery or a repairman, your boss would absolutely expect you to get some work done from home. Wouldn’t make any sense for you to charge vacation and sit around all day not working, waiting for the delivery person. They are probably voicing a stronger stance than will actually play out in reality.
Chief
Will be interesting to see the response the next time you say “I’ll be at home today because of X. Just confirming you don’t want me to work from home today.” Would seem silly for a boss to choose for you to be unproductive and not contribute. That arrangement wouldn’t work for me; I guess you’ll have to decide whether it works for you.
Chief
That’s not going to work with me, since September my children are out of school due to Covid/flu for 21 days already 😆 I guess they have 55 days of vacation per year at least?
Because 21 days from Sept to November is not time to time
What’s the name of the company so I can avoid it at all costs?
How would they know it’s you?
I agree with you
