Outside of your day job, how do you learn the high level technical aspects of salesforce? I’m a functional lead at a big 4 consulting company on a long term project (more strategy and PM work) but want to have better technical understanding. I don’t want to be a tech lead, but enough to have educated conversations with clients (architecture, data model, integrations, privacy, refresh specifics, etc), and potentially work towards Solution Architect. Any advice would be highly appreciated!

join big salesforce projects that have gone wrong, you’ll know more about the architecture...

Very true!

Take on some of the config work yourself. You’ll learn tons being hands on and start to understand some of the technical repercussions of doing even minor changes.

Thanks! I came from industry doing all config work so I feel comfortable there but more want an understanding of overall technical architecture

I was in an almost identical position @OP. Have you looked at studying for (and possibly taking) some of the data designer certs and/or PD-1? I actually learned a lot of useful material by prepping for those.

https://www.sfdc99.com is also a good resource to better understand Apex fundamentals

This is one I’ve been suggested! That’s great to hear you find it helpful!

Transitioned from industry admin to business analyst/functional lead to solution Architect and often business architect these days. My path was doing things in the system. Love my dev org to build out potential solutions. Read a lot on forums, blogs, salesforce documentation regarding what I am trying to solve. I also work very closely with dev teams and ask them a lot of questions. I learn from them. I also had projects where the tech lead wasn't staffed yet and i had to fill in which led to very quick learning. Also know your limits... it's ok not to know something, just need to know where to find that answer. Good luck! I do not have any of the dev or architect certs.

Start with trailhead, and Google some key words, it will bring a lot blogs in the topics.
