With outsourced IA/RA, you're more likely to get stuck with predominantly compliance (SOX) work, where you might be more likely to be exposed to other non-SOX audits in-house. Work-life balance is usually better in industry, but it's definitely not always like that. As far as why someone may leave industry to go to consulting, it may be because they see limited opportunities for advancement in their role. Consulting can definitely accelerate your advancement in the right places where you may be stuck in a role for quite awhile in some audit shops. Some people also just like the pace, challenge, and variation that comes with client services.

I started in industry and switched to consulting ia/sox after a couple years. More opportunity for growth and to get more exposure to different things. Bigger raises and entrepreneurial environment.

That’s so awesome 👏🏼 thank you for sharing. This has been more helpful than you know

I did external audit for 2 years, industry IA for 1 year, and just started doing outsourced IA at a firm. Left industry because the company wanted us to be in office 5 days a week whereas firms these days are far more flexible. Industry IA was extremely chill, almost too chill. Standards were extremely lax compared to the firm I used to work at. Less stressful because you work with the same company all year, same contacts and controls. You can also get exposure to more operational audits. You might also get access to company’s GL system so it’s easier to fetch audit support whereas if you’re outsourced you will have to deal with client as middle man. Another advantage is you can kinda play hardball with the departments you’re auditing if they give you a tough time because there’s no “client service” BS involved and they can’t replace you as easily. WLB was great on paper but when you factor in the commute 5 days a week I realized I’d much rather work more hours at home. When I was searching I found more opportunities than expected wanted their people back in office full time. I joined a consulting firm because they offer career progression, more competitive comp, and more flexibility. Since you’re the revenue generator you can expect actual merit increases and bonuses whereas industry it’s likely they’ll just give you a measly COL increase if any increase at all. These firms are also pretty eager for talent and are more likely to give a healthy sign on bonus as opposed to industry. The firm I joined pays OT as well and really lets you choose if you want to work over 40 hours. For me it was a no brainer to turn the 6 hours I spent driving every week to working for extra pay beyond base salary.

Firm lol

Have an opportunity to join a law school friend of mine at a small boutique appellate firm. Background is big shops (Big4 post law school) doing niche area of corporate deal work. Perhaps a good opportunity to have more control over my work and promises of growing the firm and taking the reigns one day. Seems like a good gig but a bit worried about the comp and lack of benefits comparatively. Would also be a huge shift in practice area. Any insights/thoughts?

Seems like a lot of questions on partner comp and net worth. Here is the rule of thumb: 1) Big 4 partners make $600K to $1.5m based on seniority and practice. 2) MBB partners make $1m -3m based on seniority Typically your expenses are between $100-300k. Add Taxes to it, that’s the amount you add every year. About 6-10% return yearly on the savings. So net worth of partners are probably between $3m to $20m depending on which company and seniority, investment profile, etc. Where am I wrong?
