I was in the final stages of an interview with Microsoft two weeks ago, in partner marketing. Then the recruiter told me they were putting the hiring process on hold to assess the need for the role. Well, then we heard about Microsoft layoffs last week. Seems like most were in Xbox and Project Alpha but there’s not a lot of information out there. Should I hold out any hope that I’m going to get this job? Any insights on how much these layoffs have impacted the marketing org and/or new hiring?

I think it has do with the fact that many are as busy or busier than ever, but the financial incentives aren’t there any more given the reduction and/or elimination of promotions/ bonus/raises.

I left because of pay as well. I making 20k more an I went from a high COL to low COL, so in reality it’s like 30k more. Benefits and bonuses are also wayyyyyy better.
As someone thinking of leaving PA. When your entire life is your job, due to covid, the stress of public accounting really takes a toll. I’m considering leaving despite the uncertainty, to have a job that has less stress and there is more of a work life balance.

A lot of places are still hiring for accounting roles. Almost everyone I know that left my firm had another job lined up. When your firm is increasing your already intense work load, eliminating bonuses, not giving you a pay raise, but you can still find work elsewhere for more money, the choice becomes obvious for a lot of people.

Some firms are suddenly strapped for cash, will no longer hand out bonuses, are laying people off left and right and have become a terrible work environment. Meanwhile some other firms are in better financial shape and are able to hire people with good offers. Suddenly a previously "peer" firm becomes a much better proposition and people start leaving.

At the end of the day it’s a job. There’s a ton of koolaid drinking at these places, but I think the spell is kind of broken in this type of environment. When that happens people start considering how to maximize their personal benefits.
