People are saying Kamala Harris isn’t Black
I’m sorry you’re having this experience. But also, I don’t think you should assume it’s because you’re black. You may have lost some of those roles to other black people.
I say this because I just won a role at a company with a very rigorous interview process. When they offered me the role, all 3 people made sure to tell me the competition was stiff and the other candidates were brilliant. Since getting that role, I have come across two people who also interviewed for the role… both black. Imagine them walking away thinking it was their blackness that stopped them from getting that role when actually that wasn’t the case and the firm genuinely does think they’re amazing.
My point is that the world will hand you enough heartbreaking racist experiences. My personal advice, which you certainly don’t have to take, is not to make these stories for yourself when there’s not good evidence that it’s the case. If there’s something affirming that you can hold onto “they thought you were a great candidate”, try your best to hold on to that rather than internalizing negative narratives when you don’t have to. You’re literally in a place where you get to choose to tell yourself a better story! It makes a difference (for me) and maybe it will help you hold out more hope and feel confident going into other interviews.
Wishing you the best of luck on your interview journey.
I definitely think some of us are getting conversations instead of interviews so the folks on the other side of the table/call can say “our pool was diverse.”
There is undoubtedly conscious and unconscious bias in hiring and it's so hard to determine the true deciding factor sometimes. I would hedge my bets by researching companies that have a great culture, already have a diverse team so you know they are walking the walk.
I'm new to the bowl, so I'm just getting to know the environment here. However, this post gave me a thought. One of the issues about being black in tech is that you're not always certain whether certain behavior is racially motivated, but something seems off. You examine your non-black peers' experiences and it seems dramatically different. If there's any place where someone should be able to say, "I feel like I'm being discriminated against" without someone making them feel it's all in their head, it should be in a black space. It doesn't mean they want to be a victim or they're going to go off and be depressed. Maybe they just want to express it. Food for thought. Not trying to bash any particular comment. Maybe the poster wanted constructive feedback, not sure. This just came to my mind. I love all my people ✊🖤.
Start your own company …. It brings experience, leadership, networking and ownership ☘️
I interviewed at 26 companies (including some FAANG) for a total of 62 interviews over 1.5 years before I finally received an offer. Know that it is definitely not just you. You can’t tell me that there’s not clear bias in tech re: “culture fit.”
They told you that the person they chose was not a person of color or are you assuming this? When we want equality it’s problematic to post assumptions that are divisive.

Sorry about that, it's terrible. Don't be discouraged though, there are plenty of other opportunties!
