OP and what did you do when you saw/heard this. Did you defend the students? Did you try to stop the people shouting? Or did you just run to social media?

Dont ignore this. You need to report this. Not just in social media. Otherwise you are complicit as well.
What is there to report? Racism isn't illegal. If there were actual threats then yes you might report it although it's more effective if the complaining witness is one of the people said threats are directed to.
Probably the same wise people who voted to "make America great again "

This was in NYC. Yes I’m ashamed because i didnt do anything. (I’m chinese myself) I don’t know what to say because while the allegations are inappropriate and unnecessary, they aren’t entirely false?...i don’t condone exotic meat consumption but im not denying the fact that these markets exist. Also its not right for people to travel outside the virus epicenter and risk spreading to strangers but i heard some left anyway knowing they had the virus because they didnt believe in the local medical system could help them and thats true given how strained the system is there right now, can’t blame them.
American also eat venison, squirrels, and bear, which should be also exotic meat.

To answer this question, no. The virus will not worsen racism. People doing that had problems with Asians to begin with and were looking for something to blame them for. It's disgusting but they were racists to start.
It’s so common to wear face masks in Asian countries. It is considered impolite if you are coughing and don’t have a mask on.
I wonder if that group of people really knows if they are Chinese or not. Can they tell?
I encourage you to call them out next time and say that’s not nice to make comments like this.
Bigger issue is the foolishness in wearing masks and thinking it would help prevent disease.
