Below are 13 important developments that exist today because of unions. Also, wages would be significantly lower and there would be a much larger gap between the rich and the poor. I honestly don’t think a Union would fix PA’s problems. 1. Weekends 2. Paid Vacation 3. Sick Leave 4. Social Security 5. 40 Hour Work Week 6. Pensions 7. Unemployment Insurance 8. Child Labor Laws 9. Overtime Pay 10. Wrongful Termination Laws 11. 8 Hour Work Day 12. Workplace Safety Laws 13. Collective Bargaining Rights of Workers

By the way, if someone is "taking advantage of you", you need to leave. Nobody put a gun to your head (I hope). I know that we put on a show for the interns, but the expectations of this career are well documented. We rely on people quitting to continually thin the herd. Those people usually fall into jobs in industry that are years ahead of their college alumni who went straight into the accounting department. I recommend that you start your own company providing audit and tax services. You can pay your people as much or as little as you desire. One of the guys I used to work with did exactly that (quit as a staff) , and he's doing just fine while paying above market wages.

The firms would go out of business if they had to pay over time

like

I've yet to see an intelligible argument for why.

Here's the argument: 😓😓😓🤑😓😓

Idc about over time...but can I get out before 8pm when it's not busy season?

Here we go again wit this Union talk...

like

There's already a PA union, it's called industry.

That's on you buddy...

How about if the partners were to take less money and spread the wealth.

Stand up for yourself.

like

Not that I was serious about starting a union but my situation seems to be more of the norm for a lot of PA. And there is more too it than working until 8 often when it's not busy season. I think overall the profession should move towards making work life balance a real thing. I have no problem speaking up for myself and have no problem having adult conversations lol...my point is it since it happens to so many people my one "adult conversation" is not going to change the real issue - the firms don't give a shit how hard they work you

like

It's all relative to me. I spent five years of college in retail. The managers of retail stores are abused far worse than us, for a fraction of the pay. I don't think we have it any worse than the people who came before us (e.g., current partners).

like

I was in retail as well, and know retail managers. It really depends what company you work for but yes they work hard. Wouldn't necessarily say they have it worse then us. But just because current partners and people above us had it bad doesn't mean they shouldn't do more to make it better for employees

like

What's the argument against unions here? I see a lot of people writing it off with nothing meaningful to add.

like

I’m down for it.

like

That is an argument for why they've been useful in the past. Not for why PA needs a union right now...

like

EY is a good place to work. Busy season sucks, and I occasionally work late outside of busy season. If my boss had me constantly working past 8:00 without reason, I would have a grown-up discussion and we would figure out a resolution. I wouldn't ask thousands of my closest colleagues to change our labor practices to get me out three hours earlier because I was afraid to speak up.

like

EY1 “other people are also taken advantage of” is a really shitty argument. PA Staff should absolutely be union and get OT. It’s insane that they don’t.

Hi All, I have a fully furnished, sun soaked, art-filled 1 BR apartment available for month-to-month rental indefinitely. The space is located right in the heart of Union Square. With noise insulated windows and a tree-lined view, the apartment gets great privacy. I am asking for $2k/month (which is significantly lower than what I pay), but am flexible depending on interest. Building: full service, door man building with elevators and laundry. (Continued in comments)

Looking for a reasonably priced sound studio in Manhattan (record, mix, good facility with light sound design). Also - any local agents who rep good v/o talent (union and non)? Double thx. DM if pref.

Currently in audit, looking to do tax returns for friends and family on the side to make a little extra money. Two questions: 1) would the firm have a problem with this if it doesn’t interfere with my work? I assume no since the firm probably isn’t interested in filing my brother’s return (he is a union electrician). 2) I have no experience in tax (I don’t even do my own return), so is there a good software to use for this or what is the best way to learn how to do tax returns?

I am newly in a wheelchair and am unable to find clear information on the ADA website about what my job is required to do. I’ve talked with my Union Rep and they are checking. I’m requesting to be on a 504 plan, but I have no idea if they are required to add handicapped entrances or not. I know I have to scan my badge to use the button, but trying to scan my badge, open the door, and not drop anything seems a bit unattainable to me at the moment. Anyone have some insight or dealt with this?

Hear me out. We’re living in the residual days of advertising power. Back in the day, if you worked in advertising, you very much shaped culture. Advertising creatives shared the airwaves with only the likes of Hollywood and national news. There were only so many pipes into culture and advertising was a big one. But today, the pipes are democratized. Random teens on TikTok are having more impact on culture than Mad Ave. And yet, so much ego and self importance remains.
