It’ll be pretty hard

I literally did this. Worked in insurance litigation (acting on behalf of large LAs/insurers). It was hard and took several months of job searching but I managed to get into a corporate paralegal job which allowed me to get experience in that area without needing to start from the very bottom. You may be luckier considering there seem to be more corporate jobs about. There’s also the SQE route meaning more firms are taking on paralegals in one area with a view to qualifying.

Does higher vault ranking (v10-30 compared to v80-100) open more doors for corporate in-house opportunities for a senior associate? If chambers practice area rankings and expected billable hours are similar and they offer the same DPW pay scale, does it matter less? Is it better to stay at/lateral to a firm where you might be able last longer to learn the necessary skills? Any personal anecdote or advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Those of you Director/ VP level HR folks, what exactly do you do in terms of “strategic” HR? I earned my Director wings 1 year ago. When I started in HR I always wondered about the meetings my Director or VP would be in. Like what were these big cool things they’d be working on. Now I’m a Director with only a generalist under me so I get bogged down with the tactical stuff but I’m wondering am I missing out on what a Director level person should be doing.

I worked at agencies for 10 yrs & had tons of variety of work, clients & a ton of responsibilities.

I recently accepted a “dream” bra job that aligns with my interests. Everyone I tell says “there couldn’t be a better fit” & is a perfect role for me.

3 months in I’m realizing how little variety & responsibility in my new job & I’m already BORED. And no discussions with manager about goals, progression or how things are going. I’m nervous I had blinders on & job fit is not for me. Any advice?!

Hello, I’m an associate (almost at the one year mark) at a midsize firm on the EPL team. I did about 2 years of employment law as a clerk during school and know that’s what I want to go into. I’ve asked for more EPL work but keep catching PI cases. I second-chaired an employment trial but don’t see any EPL work for the foreseeable future and wasn’t getting as much EPL exposure as I wanted before the trial. Any advice on a lateral move to a bigger firm with a broader range of EPL work?

Recently ( as of May 22nd, 2022) I was told my promotion was put in as a “request”.

After a brief discussion with the HR Director; I was told that said promotion could easily be put off until October…

There’s a seriously lack of role clarity; I’m consistently being tasked to do things that outside of my immediate skill set/job description.

Let me be clear; I have no problem with this, however when the pay doesn’t match…This leaves me feeling burned out most days.

I am thinking about Corp Dev as a few recruiters have come to me about opportunities in this space. Anyone have advice to share on Corp dev vs IB?

For those of you who have been formally given the title of “senior paralegal” what are the qualifications for that title at your firm? Does your firm do promotions from paralegal to senior paralegal? At my firm we are all simply just “paralegal” (we all fully handle our own dockets, no assistants) and I would like to help develop a concrete career track for paralegal to senior paralegal.
