Paralegals, I’d like to initiate a discussion regarding bonuses. Like, what is your firm’s practice on bonuses for paralegals? Not necessarily end of year but just in general? What kind of bonuses are you receiving throughout the year and do you think it’s fair?

My team alone did a little over a million in revenue last year, referred two major clients to the firm, and brought in two new associates; they gave me $300.

Rather than increase bonuses we’re apparently getting a “12 Days of Christmas”, the highlight of which was a lotto scratcher.

Actively looking for new roles in Chicago.

like

That's bs

Bonuses are nonexistent for paralegals. However when I was in house based on performance and company profits I usually got $10-15k a year.

Recent IconRecent

I'm very involved with the clients. Usually I'm the one who handles them providing statuses and following their care. My attorney goes months without speaking to a client on their case. By the time the client talks to them, they go on about how amazing i am and how i take great care of them. A lot of clients are referrals from prior clients and mention me. I usually get bonuses throughout the year when cases settle. My bonuses can range from 10K to 20K. This year I'm at 35K so far because I came very close to quitting last year.

Are they hiring..willing to relocate 😂

My firm must be trash. The only bonus we get is $500 at the end of the year and it’s taxed of course🙄 insurance defense litigation in GA. Regardless of meeting or exceeding your hours, there’s no bonus for that.

like

P10, that bloooooooows. Im very surprised about that from an in house spot.

If I bill above 1600 hours, my bonus can be 10-15K. Good luck to me 😂

like

My annual bonus is $1000.00. I don't think that's a fair bonus for all I do, but it is what it is. My husband (not in law) just heard that the staff at his office are getting no bonus this year, so at least I can expect a little something.

like

The last few years, I've received $10K and it's given at the same time as the annual salary increase. AmLaw 200 firm. I've heard unofficially that I'm getting one of the higher bonuses, so I presume other paralegals in my firm are receiving mid-four figures.

like

Curious but what practice group and how many hours are you billing?

like

We’re eligible for a $1k bonus each quarter for meeting/exceeding hours along with the attorneys. This is nice and appreciated.

On the other hand, year end bonuses for paras seems to be random and based on absolutely nothing, whereas there is a bonus structure for the attorneys. I strongly believe there should be metrics involved for para bonuses as well so we have some expectation of what sort of bonus we can get instead of just *hoping* that the firm will throw us some extra money. For example, last year my annual bonus was $5k. I out billed every other paralegal (by a lot) and some attorneys too, and overall it just feels like BS for the amount of responsibility, extra coverage and overall work I’ve done year over year. After taxes that $5k when divided by my hours OVER my billable requirements essentially ended up being a few extra bucks per hour. Soooo not worth it. I’m planning to leave in the new year.

like

I bonus $6k for billing 1440 hours for the year. That is super doable le for me. Plus we get xmas bonuses in an amount determined by the partners.

like

Bonus if you are at 100% pace of 2% of salary and then additional money on sliding scale depending on how much over pace you are. Bonuses are twice a year.

like

My bonus is usually the amount of a paycheck.

like

I’ve only worked in 2 small plaintiffs firms and my bonuses ranged from $2k-$6k. The lower end of the spectrum were given EOY - that firm only did Title VII. The higher end of the spectrum was while working in PI and bonuses would come following large settlements and also EOY.

My first in-house role was $500 at Christmas & my second in-house was not a thing. I moved to a new in-house role in Feb; my annual bonus is 30% of salary and will also be receiving a one-time, project-based bonus at an additional 25% of salary. Needless to say, this new situation is amazing and based on the workload it’s more than fair.

like

My last firm I got is $2000 EOY. My current firm I received $1500 last year.

Billed 1800 in a insurance defense firm in Los Angeles and only got a $500 bonus

You better be making six figures

I received an offer for an account executive position. 110 k base and 110 k in incentive commission w/ 60 k rsu over a 4 year vesting period. The position is exempt which I find odd. They are offering a non recoverable draw of 75% of my commission for the first 3 months and 50 % for months 3-6. This is a saas sales position. Any feedback would be great. I think this offer is not competitive to other SaaS orgs. Any feedback on a counter would be greatly appreciated.

After waiting 18 months for my title to be corrected, I’m looking to leave so I can be compensated my worth. But I don’t want to accept a counter from the company to keep me if they wouldn’t do it in the first place am I wrong? I’ve dropped hints about making more and my boss encourages me to see what’s out there. Apparently the hang up is a manager title when I only mange 3 people. Even though I manage 3 services and many many million dollars.

Additional Posts in Paralegals

I’ve been activity looking for new paralegal roles but my last position was working in the public sector. Some have told me that it’s a pro, others have said that it’s a con. I’m largely applying for positions in the private sector now, and I’ve found that I don’t have many of the entry level skills like e-filing that employers expect. Is there any alternative to taking on a role that is completely entry-level to gain those?

I originally took a role at my firm as an Administrative Assistant, but often times am considered a Paralegal/Legal Assistant (I am billed as “Paralegal.”) Any idea how I can figure out an official title for myself? It’s a tiny firm so there is no protocol with anything. I feel uncomfortable calling myself a Paralegal since I haven’t done any official training, but my job is definitely more than an administrative assistant. Thanks!

I hit my one year at my company on the 15th of November. I had lunch with my boss on the 10th and he mentioned a raise but not how much or when it would be effective.

Flash forward to now, we’ve had 2 paychecks since then and I haven’t received anything. He said last week he would let me know this week, but I’m getting frustrated.

He’s raising my billing rate effective Jan. 1, and I’m worried I won’t get my raise until then. Anyone have something similar happen?
