I agree with Attorney 1, but not with Associate 1. “Just taking it” unilaterally isn’t going to work long term. But I believe that many/most partners are willing to work with people who work with them. I have two kids whom I’m very close with and always have been. I saw a lot of them when they were little. And as a result I didn’t sleep much, worked late into the night, etc. You need to have a frank discussion with your supervisor about what you need to do, whatever that is. And if you hold up your end of the resulting. deal by hitting deadlines, hitting your hours, and flexing when you have to flex to meet client demands, you will be fine in the short and long term.
Firm culture also matters. Many firms would support the approach I suggested. Some won’t. If your firm is one of the latter, I suggest riding out this storm as best you can and then finding a new home when the lateral market reawakens.
Just take it
Just ask. I told my partners of the need for flexibility for my child when I applied. My last firm was not as flexible, and it was very important to me to find a place that was. They have understood and it hasn't been an issue as long as I meet my deadlines and billing requirements
