The better thing to evaluate is the public school district you are based in. If it is a good district, then send your kids there. Why pay for private if the public school is good. If it is a bad school district, then consider private

like

I grew up going to public school and turned out fine. I most likely will be sending my kids to public school as well.

like

Public school in a top school district. I'm paying those property taxes for a reason.

like

Agree with P2. I think it highly depends on the schools. I was lucky enough to be in one of the top NY school districts, but schools just a few miles away were doing miserably. Look at the rankings, graduation rates, Advanced placement options, extra curriculars, diversity, etc.

like

Public school if you can afford to live in a good school district. Those who cannot are out of luck in this country.

like

Public*. Although a school for picnics sounds delightful.

like

Class size is very important too, as is per pupil spend, and often overlooked. Private school doesn’t always = great school. There are some public schools that are better then private because of the resources they have available to them.

like

BTW, class size benefits are not linear. At a certain point they taper off at about 15 - 18 students.

I went to a picnic school in NYC (known for being notorious) and it helped me learn how to integrate with all levels of society. I turned out fine and hopefully my kids will too.

I immigrated to the US and went to all private school through the end of HS, but had heavy heavy financial aid

like

I went to Meadowcreek High School, a public school that was largely minority and low income. School ratings were low, very low. The school helped all excelling students achieve at their best. So, to that I say if your kid is smart and a hard worker, they will make it anywhere. I have two children they are going to public school and if we don't move they same high school I attended.

like

I’ll definitely put my kids in public schools but yes in a good school district

like

I'm also an immigrant and don't know the US school system well. We recently bought a home with a 10/10 rated elementary school within 5 mins walking distance. However, the school looks old and run down atleast from the outside. Are many 10/10 schools in US like this? I honestly imagined it to be nice looking with great play area and stuff..

like

I went to both growing up (private through 8th grade & then moved to a “good school district” & switched to public). The biggest difference was that private school had MUCH smaller classes (~8-10 kids per teacher vs 30+ in public), and really interesting opportunities that couldn’t be scaled at a public school (semester at sea, field trips to the Great Wall of China, etc). In the end, I ended up at a great business school, and have had plenty of amazing opportunities...I think it’s a matter of...can you afford to pay essentially college tuition for the entirety of your kid’s education, and are those extracurricular opportunities worth it

like

We moved to an area with great public schools and all three of our kids went to top 10 universities (they graduated HS in 2012 (Duke), 2014 (Stanford) and 2015 (Yale)).

Hey 🐠! I wanted to share a podcast that I came across this week. It’s targeted towards people who grew up in homes with mental illness. I myself had a mother who was likely Borderline/Bipolar (per a psychiatrist I saw myself - i hadn’t even heard of Borderline at the time). While I have ‘divorced’ my mother, I had a daughter about a year ago my mother has started spinning up again. I went looking for information to validate that I am making the right decision and found this podcast cathartic.

How do you divide your time between your kids? My second is an extra needy and demanding, high spirited kid. My first is laidback and easy going. I always feel like the eldest gets the short end of the stick and never gets enough of my attention even tho she’s always been more attached to me than my husband. She never gets one-on-one time with me as it is since her sister (now 2) is still super glued to my side. Any suggestions for juggling this? Or to ease the mom guilt?

Hi Moms- Curious to get a sense of what your different parental leave policies look like and how you have liked them. My company gave 12 weeks paid and I felt it was woefully short for my first. Before having my second, I'm interested in pushing my company to increase the time and am curious to hear what other companies offer. Beyond just the time, was your company flexible? Is it the same for all parents? Did it feel like enough? Thank you!

Hello! A senior associate that I work for is expecting and she will be going on parental leave soon. She has been a great mentor to me and so I wanted to get/send her a gift congratulating her on the new baby once she goes on her leave. Any ideas for a gift? (We aren’t incredibly close so it doesn’t seem as easy as shopping for a friend/family member who just had a baby, if that makes sense) TIA!
