Parents are conservative suburbanites. They are convinced Seattle isn’t safe due to social unrest. Issues seem to be isolated to one part of town and I’m perfectly safe. Everything feels normal. Have asked me to move away from cities and the west coast indefinitely. They would like me to move to a suburb in a conservative state. Even if I wanted to, my job is based in large financial centers and WFH isn’t permanent. This is ludicrous but how do I even respond...

Walk around your neighborhood on video call with them to show them you're in a safe area that looks nothing like what they see on TV. Edit: I'm a 26yo conservative suburbanite in Puget Sound region... would I personally choose to live in major city? No. But is there anything broadly unsafe about it? No. The unrest is very very localized. Your parents are just concerned for your safety. Instead of looking at this as a conservative vs lib problem, just recognize that it comes from a place of concern. Allay that concern, your parents will be happy.

It in Thai kind of dynamic. The parents think the decision is theirs to make. OP needs to let them know it’s not and if they harp on it, stop the conversational circle* politely by ending it or redirecting it. This is how adults interact with each other effectively. *if you give reasons they will seek to solve those reasons for you, “see! We found you an apartment that takes dogs right here!"

Tell them you appreciate their advice and will research moving. Never mention it again. If they bring it up, say you are still researching options. When they bring it up a third time, say you are 50K short of the amount you need for a suburban house, and you will consider it again when you’ve saved that much. Just keep coming up with reasonable statements that make it sound like you are hearing their argument. You can’t reason with people who hold irrational views.

Thank them for their input, then do what you think is right because you’re a grown up now

Yeah it’s really this easy

Just tell them that everything they have seen regarding increased shootings, property damage, civil unrest, and complete lawlessness (e.g., CHOP/CHAZ and Portland as a whole) is a right wing conspiracy.

I will vote for this suggestion. Afterall Covid is a conspiracy, everything is the liberal left’s fault and their invisible friend with superpowers have helped elect the biggest abomination in history in power so they can feel better about their insecure little lives.

They don’t get a say. They don’t pay your mortgage/rent. I am in a similar position with my parents, I don’t discuss it with them and will not do so.

That’s fair.

If there was a real increase in crime in my immediate neighborhood I would consider relocating. However it’s been isolated to a different part of town that I never go to.

My parents thought the same, they came and visited and saw trump supporters on a corner with their flags and were surprised that all kinds of people live everywhere.

It happens, just remind them you’re a grown up now and get to make your own decisions. My parents mentioned something like this to me once. I then reminded my mother that they were cool with me volunteering to go to Iraq, so they really didn’t have a leg to stand on there. Last time we had that conversation.

If you are independent and on your own, it’s time to defend your own actions. You’ll need to stand up to them, if you want. It may be a tough balance, especially if you have a good relationship with your parents. I would start by affirming to them that where you live is your choice.
