Drive time will depend on traffic, a lot. And where in Fairfax County you are. My preference and experience would be to avoid Warren County (getting to Fairfax sucks most of the time, local govt is bad). Fauquier County taxes should rule that area out. Clarke County might be good if you are in the western/ northern area of Fairfax but they should avoid being in the Berryville town limits (have to pay county and town taxes in everything, love Berryville itself but the county Is small enough to enjoy the town and live outside of it. Frederick county (VA) might also work. IMO unless they are right on the VA/WVa border, 1-1 1/2 hours to get to most of Fairfax is only realistic in non-rush hour which starts ~5am out here goes to ~9am (pre-COVID) and 4:00pm to 6:30-7pm westward.

Is W VA an hour from Fairfax? I doubt it. I live in Charlottesville and have driven through West Virginia a couple of times and have not found it appealing at all, especially for a POC. Morgantown is as good as it gets. CHO is an excellent community, but is about 2 hours from Fairfax.

Thanks, we shortlisted Falling Waters & Inwood, which are close to Martinsburg

If you're considering alternatives - I would look at Poolesville MD in Montgomery County MD. Its part of the county's agriculture reserve, and is within about 30 miles of DC. Also a short ferry ride across the Potomac into Leesburg.

Richmond is an hour and a half i think. Lovely place

like

I was in WV and they'd call them Pill Billies

funny

Maybe front royal, there are a bunch of wineries and breweries out there and the cost of living is cheap!

like

I would not recommend Front Royal or Warren County to a POC.

Richmond is nice, good COL, pretty diverse. Trying to find my way there myself!

like

Fauquier County. I would not recommend WV for POC if we are being honest. It’s not a comfortable experience at all.

Yeeeeeeeep

Front Royal, Culpepper, Warrenton, Delaplane all pop into my mind in terms of proximity to Fairfax while still being much laid back/nature focused. Lots of great hiking in the area too if that’s of interest (Shenandoah is incredible! ). If they did occasional want to get out, there’s some nice laid back wineries and breweries in the area, but it is by no means anything like thr Fairfax co towns or Leesburg. (Im a NOVA native that lived in the Midwest for a few years. COL is higher but gave up a great job to move back because of how much I loved the nature, mountains, more hubs from social POV, and ethnic and cultural diversity—the latter is likely the most present in Fairfax county / Arlington / DC but unsure)

Omg i lived in NoVa which is great (anywhere from McLean to Tysons to Clifton to Loudoun Country are great). WVa, while beautiful, is a complete dump from a people perspective. Had a miserable time at Harpers Ferry. WV is probably the last state I would live in.

like

Thanks for context, parents don't have an active social life and keep to themselves. Just want to make sure the places we short list are safe and not complete dumps.

WVA -- some parts of it are actually suburbs of DC. I found those areas nice

like

Purcellville is nice, but for a retired couple, I’d said move over the mountain a few minutes more to Clarke and get the lower taxes:) (It was on our short list when me moved a few years ago, but being closer to retirement age, the taxes ruled it out).

like

I live in Ffx and always loved NoVa. Fairfax, mclean, tysons corner, cliffton all nice

are you serious? ..WV is not a place to live.....certainly not a peaceful place...unless you enjoy living with gangs

Do you show your human side at work? Also share your gender if you’re comfortable. I’m F and I generally do, but wondering if this is not perceived well. For example, sometimes I talk to my peers about my weekend plans, sometimes about how tired I am because of work, I recently had surgery and shared with them details about it.

I’m a mid-level working in a niche area in NYC. I like the work I do, put in long hours, high quality work, take time to mentor juniors, etc. I see myself at a law firm long term but now wondering if this is the right firm to make partner. Among others, one big concern I have is the non-existent emphasis on diversity and inclusion initiatives (they aren’t even pretending to care...), no committees, no statements in support of POC, etc. How do I find firms really committed to these issues?

Lots of post about kids so I’ll offer one that’s been on my mind. Why more than one kid? I grew up with a sibling. She is my best best friend but as I’ve gotten older realized we were more of the exception. Lucky that we are same gender (which I do think impacts closeness), that we are close in age, and just clicked like bffs. Have since met so many sibs with non existent and toxic relationships. More kids = more expense. After passing on genes and getting love of a child, why have more than one
