Parents of young kids: does your spouse work full time? If so, how do you navigate daycare or school drop-off/pickup, and/or babysitting after hours?

also, curious about the monthly $ of each answer.

Yes. I normally do drop off on the way to work. She does pickup. She works from home so has a lot more flexibility to handle early pickups, days off school, etc. It would be tough without that.

We pay ~ 2,750/month for pre-school for the younger one. Older one is in public kindergarten.

Babysitters can be tough to find on short notice, but we do have a regular sitter on Wednesdays (highly recommend the set night for a sitter during the week). We pay our sitters $20/hour.

Yes, and not well. My husband works from home, so he does most of the pick up and drop off st daycare, and we have a nanny on Wednesdays. It’s something like $3100 per month for daycare and hourly for the nanny on top of that. Thinking of getting some additional help with pick ups in the afternoons because our daycare is far.

Husband works full time. I also work full time. We share responsibility for daycare drop off and pick up based upon our morning and evening commitments for work (and for me networking).

Daycare is $1,820 per month.
Babysitter (not used frequently) would be $20-25 per hour depending on which sitter used.

Thought/question I have been wondering for a while below.

I am about to start looking for engagement rings…. Thoughts on finding a jeweler that also sells Rolex’s and possibly try to get a bundle deal (looking for spend around 20ish k on the ring and just a datejust for the watch)?

I am in NYC but open to surrounding areas if anyone has any jeweler suggestions.

No idea if this is a stupid thought but figured it would be worth seeing if anyone has any experience or thoughts on this. TIA.

Has anyone else gone back to relying more on public transportation with the surging Uber / Lyft prices. I haven’t taken buses and trains much since I’ve graduated but now it just feels like I’m throwing money out the window by not making the switch back.

Some good news after almost 11 months of applying and interviews and lots of rejections finally got an offer! In NYC small firm, ex big law folks, no billable hours, niche practice area, appearance of forwarded thinking firm, remote till who knows when, emphasis on pro bono initiatives and building book of business. The catch salary. Was making around 140k at last firm with 1800 billable. Offer is 85k and revist to bump to around 100k in several months after review (plus discretionary bonus)

Giving notice next week to someone who went out of her way to recruit and hire me away from my old firm and has been really good to me. She worked for over a year to get me to come over. Now after only 6 months I’m going back to my old firm but in a different (better) group than I was in before. I am dreading the convo and feeling guilty but need to get over it. FWIW I’m 2012 and we are getting crushed with lack of senior people hence more guilt…. Just looking for a little encouragement :)
