Part of a large firm which is fairly hierarchical and am fairly junior in tenure. Feel like I don’t actually like any of my “superiors” and most of them have a very divergent views of what life is (given how much they want to work and how often they prioritize work). I like the work, I’m just tired of being exhausted by internal senior stakeholders and their never ending demands. Is industry the right place to look for some sense of reasonability? Any other advice?

Come talk to us. Our founders are ex big 4 who also wanted something different :-)

But Slalom pays less than industry, why would one not become a client instead? Much better WLB.

Depends. Industry can be a bit more relaxed depending on what you do. I work in security and came from industry, so I had a fairly “always on” kind of job already.

Either way you’ll take a pay cut if you’re a B4 partner. If you exit as a F500 VP you might be looking at a base of 250-300, with bonus and stock of 35% each. SVP maybe 300-350 base, with 45/45.

Different level of entrepreneurial freedom and independence in different firms. Maybe ask yourself first if the type of work you do for clients is what you have passion for, and you see yourself doing in the long run. If the answer to that is yes, consider a different firm. If it’s a maybe/no, then consider industry. For what’s it’s worth, we’re very different from what you describe. But I’m sure so are others.

We’re also quite different from this. There’s some amount of hierarchy at the partner level, but more in the vein of “we all know who the top 10 people are.” Day to day, we don’t feel supervised at all.

We also have a very different internal culture than the one you’re describing (which wouldn’t work for me either). We have significant autonomy at the P level. I can’t imagine being happy if I felt like I had to make SPs happy.

Need negotiating advice: I think I’m about to receive an offer. In my initial screen I gave target TC range (mistake for giving a number first, I know, I regret it) and recruiter said base pay was around there anyway, yay! But now I’m realizing I did bad math on the spot (more mistakes, I know) and I really do need base pay to be around that range to make a move worth it. I have a nagging feeling I’m now going to get low balled on base pay, any tips to negotiate that back up?

Want to improve my verbal and written communication skills. I hear reading more would help but I don’t read as much as I used to. So I’m wondering what books would help with that? Should I just read books that tickle my fancy like suspense and true crime novels? Help! Welcome to all book recommendations.
