Partner community, it’s interesting to see so much opacity and variation around partner comp...for the benefit of the community at large, do you mind sharing; (1) company, (2) Years as Partner / Equivalent, (3) cash comp (base + bonus) and (4) % Commission? Fully understand that “commission” is not the standard by any means but if you could express your comp beyond cash as % of revenue sold, I think we can cut through the noise a bit. TIA!

I have 21 years as a Partner and my comp has been between $1,500k and $1,850k the last few years. No commission and no bonus. Also vested in a pension that should get me well over $300k for life.

I think that would add to the noise. I make the same as some of my peers who have 2-3x the sales target I do... we sell different services with different pull through expectations and margin profiles. I think it’s far less about “opacity” than just complexity. I think we all have a general sense for what most partners make.

Agree with this. My total income as a % of sold revenue has fluctuated wildly exactly because I don’t work on a commission basis.

At my midsize firm (not ACN), we don't have the partner title, everyone is just called MD. We have two MD tracks, delivery and BD. With that, there's quite a bit of variability in the comp structure from one MD to another MD, even in the same track. Just as a data point, though other MDs in my track have different comp structures: 1) I've been a MD since 2010 in the delivery track 2) My comp this year should be around $500k all in, made up of $400k base and 25% bonus if I hit my targets 3) I have no sales targets, just MR targets That said, within the delivery track, we range from having no sales targets to having moderate sales targets with MR targets adjusted accordingly, and that impacts our base/bonus ratios. I've got a colleague who's been a MD since 2011 on the delivery track, but her comp was about 10% higher last year because she had some sales targets and crushed it there. On the flip side, I make about 20% more than a colleague who's been a MD on the delivery track with no sales targets since 2007. Same kind of variability with my colleagues on the BD track. All of this is just to illustrate that there's no easy rubric to determine MD comp at my firm, and most likely the industry as a whole. I wouldn't go so far as to say partner comp is 100% individualized, but there's definitely no easy template out there to determine cookie cutter partner comp.

Thoughts on what those numbers should be then?

You guys get commission?

Wasn’t the Q ^

I am a 5 year partner at a mid sized firm. Combination of selling and delivery is pretty common for most of our principals. No sales targets and only managed and sold revenues are metrics, beyond some other softer people or internal responsibilities. Variable comp is basically profit sharing, not commission. My first year I was 325 base plus 25% variable. And now it’s 425 base plus 200% variable.

We may be in the same company, at least the description feels 100% on target. I am a 9 year partner, my comp at first and fifth year was very similar to P3, now I have 425 base and 250%-500% variable.

Very helpful thank you Partner 2

Why does everyone say PE is a “low risk” way to make a lot of money? Once you hit VP level, isn’t the majority of your compensation in carry, which doesn’t get paid out until 5-7 years AFTER it is earned (while in consulting, your bonus is paid out in the year it’s earned)? And if you look at the CALPERS database, don’t many funds of mega fund/UMM PE firms fail to exceed the hurdle rate? So even at established UMM/MF PE firms there’s a possibility you’ll get no carry? Am I missing something?
