A lot of the advice on here is well intended but may leave you in a poor position with your firm. What I would do is find a partner level individual within your group that you trust, and seek out his or her “advice” on how to deal with the situation. Be open and listen, tell them the context and your vacation logistics, show that you understand the business need but offer alternatives (substitute team members, resource planning, etc), then follow his advice on how to speak to the partner on the project. What you’re effectively doing is informing someone in leadership what’s going on without sounding an alarm, and if the original partner takes issue with your execution of the advice, you were following the lead of another partner

This happened to my husband at his last firm. Partner sold a project (my husband would be PM) and scheduled the project start during our spring vacation. My husband had been working with the partner throughout the sell cycle to try to craft a reasonable project schedule and the client was very flexible and resource availability was not an issue, but the partner seemed hellbent on making an example of “the firm comes first” for the entire team. Gave him two weeks heads up that he’d need to cancel vacation and that they would bear no responsibility for costs (not to mention the downstream impact to me since I’d also carefully organized all my my project schedules around it).. Husband told them since they’d given him two weeks notice to cancel his vacation that he’d give them two weeks notice that he’d be leaving. Postscript - they brought him back as a subcontractor to work the project when we returned from vacation. Takeaways... 1. There is always flexibility (either with time or with compensation) and if it’s that important, one of those will win. 2. There is always a downstream impact on both sides of the equation and a good partner will evaluate that before making knee-jerk decisions.

They have to cover the cost, but they really shouldn't ask you at the first place.

like

Yeah F that OP. Escalate and continue to push back

Tell partner to get their shit together. Shitty leadership. Being a partner doesn’t give you a pass for being a douche. Have a face to face discussion about work life balance and coach them about there’s more to life than work. Show them that you feel pity towards them that they think it’s ok to always put work before other more important things. Be sincere and watch him/her squirm

likehelpfulupliftingsmart

..and the outcome will be that OP will feel good about him/herself momentarily, may not get to go on vacation or his money compensated and additionally piss off the partner. What an advice!! OP: setup a meeting with your P, tell him you understand the gravity of this situation however your vacation was already planned. Listen to his concerns, he probably just wants the work done on time. Find someone you can transition to and convey your plan to him as to this new person will cover you in your absence. Then come back and post your vacation pictures here.

Ask them if it’s worth losing an employee over

like

SC1 If they say yes, surely that raises bigger questions about your value there. I’d walk on the spot in that situation

Then you "demand" $30k compensation.

Challenge the partner to a duel. It's the fastest way to resolve things.

Wife had a similar situation - the end negotiated cost to the firm was roughly 150% beyond the plans we had to abandon. Upgrades to everything. Also came with handwritten cards from firm execs and an avalanche of flowers.

Context: Multiyear project as EL, relationship owner. The conversation was around Value, not Cost. When Value > Cost its irrelevant.

Sounds like your partner never got the full spring break experience if you know what I mean ...

UAT!? Come on. Tell them to get someone else for the 2 weeks

As a Partner I’ve never asked anyone to cancel their vacation, never will. That’s not how we should treat people. I can think of one example in 20 years where a manger canceled his vacation because he has screwed up massively and he wanted to fix it, but that’s about it. Vacations are good for my team, makes them more productive and happier in their work.

like

I hope so! We have much lower turnover in our group v the national service network average which I’m very proud of. I think a lot of it comes from the facts that coming up through the ranks work was never the most important thing in the world to me, I wanted to be successful but not at all costs. So I’ve maintained an attitude that we’re all in this together, we all have more important things in our life (family, friends, hobbies) and if we treat each other like human beings and understand that, it’s better for the business in the long term. There’s times when we have to do things that might be counter to that, but if those are the exceptions rather than the norm then that’s all when can do........

Well, you should negotiate an optimal solution for both parties. You can take your vacation after the project is completed. You should always be aware that of potential slippages when planning vacations in the future.

Just suck it up and do it and ask to be reimbursed for out of pockets. I’ve done that before when I’ve had to shift personal plans. You are property of the firm and it is a partner so try to make his job easier. If you don’t like it there is a door

funnylike

And I’m being deliberately provocative to observe you react, but sometimes people give up vacation, sometimes they don’t. Some people have family situations and they have to step down or work remote , and sometimes they work seven days a week. It depends

Just to be clear, unfortunately there are slippages in the schedule for some projects for some circumstances beyond our control. All I am saying is while your vacation was planned some months ago, do not be surprised if someone will ask you to postpone that vacation. In this instance, there is a lot of things that can happen in five months on a project. If I was managing the project, I would allow you to take your vacation but only after you found a backfill that can support UAT OR ask for a full reimbursement of your vacation plus interest. I am pretty sure the partner is freaking out because the OP is a critical resource on the project and UAT is a usually a critical component of the project.

funny

Dear M4 - don’t position yourself as the person who “allows” your team to take vacations. Work is what we do so we can have a life, not the other way around. Your team earns vacation time as a benefit - it’s theirs to use as they see fit, not yours to dole out like roses on “The Bachelor.”

likefunnyupliftinghelpful

While I’m sure you are excellent at your job, if UAT fails because you are missing, there are larger issues at hand.

like

ya larger issues which a team can’t handle? 🤦‍♀️

This happened to me but we were able to identify a jr level person who could step into my role for the two weeks i was gone. That person got the opportunity to lead and i got vacation. It was a win-win.
