Partner emailed me asking why I billed client 8 hours for something that should have taken 4. We initially had to make just a few changes to a purchase agreement , but then seller’s counsel came back with a few comments each time we made a small change. Even though overall there were just a few changes, process of send agmt to seller’s counsel, review their comments, discuss with partner, add in our comments, etc., understand how seller comments impact rest of deal takes time. How do I respond?

Just say sorry that’s what it took to get the good product out the door. They can easily cut it so don’t sweat it. If they keep doing this too you consider not working with them.

like

Say that.

I think a lot of times these questions come across as personal attacks but they really aren’t. You (as the person doing the work) know better than the partner what went into a particular task. They’re anticipating the client may ask about or push back on that time entry (or on the overall bill), so they’re asking you for the justification so they know what to say and so they can decide whether they think the firm should stick to its guns and bill it or write it off.

likesmart

Explain the situation and that the scope of work was more intensive than a usual purchase agreement due to OC’s incessant nitpicking and turning of more redlines than usual for a transaction of this type in your experience which is a variable that changed the time calculations and that you billed for actual billable and active time spent on this file. That’s what I say when asked. Others may have varying opinions

like

As in house counsel, as long as you can explain like you did, I’m usually ok with it. Most of us were in biglaw so we get that seemingly simple things can sometimes take a long time.

This.

You could break it all out for him

like

Just as you did. You have to account for your time. They have to account for the client.

To hopefully lessen these emails, your time entries should be as detailed as possible. Sometimes I include the specific time it took to accomplish each task if my overall time was aggregated (i.e., prepare and send e-mail to partner to clarify strategy (.3); review client’s recommendations and modify as needed (1.7), etc.).

like

Tell him it took you 10 hours but you only billed 8. Then he’ll say you should bill every minute so let’s change it to 10.

Anyone know a bit about photography? A friend was approached by a client interested in her photography. 1–Client’s asking her how much she’d charge to license 10 images for 1 year. For online use on the client website and on the client’s phone application.
2–Also, client is also requesting a price for a buyout of those images (for use in perpetuity in all media). The photographer doesn’t have experience pricing this, any tips or POV?

Ok, using excel is not a primary function for my role (this will be very obvious shortly...) So please be kind! On my sheet, in the first and third columns, I have lists of reference numbers. In the second column I have a client name. I already identified the duplicates in the first and third columns using conditional formatting. What I need to find now is column 2 value, whenever value in column 3 is identified as duplicate. Problem is, I have over 120k rows of data so I can't filter! Help!

I was laid off during Deloitte‘s mass layoff in July of last year. I have worked as an independent contractor since and projects haven’t been consistent at the client I’m working for. I’m looking to get back into a big firm and was seeing if anyone would be able to refer me or help get my foot in the door. I was a business analyst for 1.5 years at Deloitte and have several years of additional experience which I’d be more than happy to share.

I spend 2 hours a day being productive and the rest of the time watching Netflix/Hulu/etc or napping/eating.

Have been doing this for 3 months now and I continue to get positive feedback from everyone. I can do this for another year (duration of my project) and no one will say anything.

Had to get that off my chest. Life is so nice/on easy mode these days 😬
