16 weeks and so worried all of the stress I’m under is going to hurt the baby. Between work, my own scary (non-pregnancy) health stuff, the pandemic, my mom (who is a widow and lives alone, basically isolated by choice due to covid) is having health issues, and pressures to keep billable hours up, I’ve been having complete breakdowns. Today I spent almost the entire day crying and now have to make up the billable time this weekend. I really worry abt what effect this will have on the babe.
A reminder to those who are stressed about your billable hours that your value is more than your pure productivity. To those stressed about relationships, relationships are hard even for non-lawyers, but you are absolutely worthy of love. It is an important reminder for all of us that you are worthy and you are valuable. Keep fighting!
Are there any successful alternative fee arrangements/business models other than billable hours? Excluding contingency in plaintiff.
This may be just a naive/dumb question, but how do you relax when you’ve got a really stressful file? I’m a junior and I’ve been putting in ~10ish billable hours a day recently, which is more than I’m used to. The evenings (post-8pm) are generally my time to decompress - read a book, watch dumb tv, whatever - but it’s been all work lately until 10 or 11pm and I struggle to go straight from work to bed. Any insight on what everyone else does?
My Shareholder came into my office yesterday and proceeded to tell me that "we" were getting sloppy & "we" needed to get our billable up and that she had missed things. She made a point to say hers were low & she never gave me info regarding billable time. Our biggest client cuts half our time.
During the interview they never mentioned there were billable req.
1 month ago she was singing my praises. Had been real sick last 2 months and went to HR re med accommodation and now this.
I was part of the tech layoffs over the past couple of weeks. I have an opportunity to go back in house or back to a law firm. Both are great opportunities and comparable comp. Pro of law firm - stability (less likely to be laid off). Pro of in house - no billable hours. Should I ride out the recession at a law firm until things settle down or take the risk and go back to in house?
Patent litigators - how many hours a week do you work to stay on track with your billable hours req? Currently work solely in prosecution and always hear people say that pros has a better WLB but I personally don’t think pros has good WLB to begin with. 150 hours a month on a pure prosecution docket is a struggle.
First gen lawyer here (not that that really impacts the question/post) but I see all these posts about entering billable time and appropriate descriptions (mostly in big law or other practice areas). How often do people here run into clients requesting meetings to have their bills explained or refusing to pay certain work? Are you small, mid-size, big law, and who in your firm is tasks with these explanation meetings?
How much are you pressured to finish projects under a certain number of billable hours. Does your boss - or do your account reps - begin a project by presenting an estimate that they hold fast to?
I love the work I do and the people I work with. However, my work life balance isn’t great and I hate having a billable hours goal that doesn’t feel attainable. How have others balanced a similar dilemma?
When work is created for you - staff. When you create work - Partner / MD / Principal or what whatever you call people who create billable hours for you 👍
Are there any BCBAs here?
What's the most rewarding thing in this field for you guys? Definitely not salary, although it's just decent.
For me, it's working with parents and when they are onboard, and we see the massive progress in the kids.
Lastly, what's your ideal salary range for a 20 billable hours BCBA?
Was just laid off from a big PR Firm where I was a planner. The sad news is that strategy was valued for winning pitches but rarely scoped for ongoing work. We made the agency and PR teams money but never saw it turn into billable hrs. The agency didn’t know how to sell its value. I’m now looking for my next position. What are some roles out there for brand strategists outside of agency? Reevaluating whether to go into an agency or in house.
How many billable hours do people in prosecution tend to average each month? I’ve gone through waves of feeling like my billable hours requirement is reasonable to feeling like I’m drowning and can’t possibly do it for that long.
If you asked to be considered for early promotion and didn’t get it (despite being highly rated, exceeding billable goal, etc) would you look elsewhere? Is it right to be angry about it? I don’t want to spin myself up unnecessarily if it’s unjustified
I’m a first-time prospective lateral likely to get an offer shortly. I just received a lateral questionnaire that requests billable hours, rates, fees collected, etc. for the last three years. Forgive my ignorance but is this normal/standard? Do people actually answer these honestly? One of the reasons I’m leaving my firm is there isn’t enough work in my group so of course my hours are low.
Looking to leave a govt job for a junior attorney role in a small workers comp defense firm. I have no experience in workers comp. How easy is it to learn the work and make 1850 billable hours? What future opportunities does this experience give?
Anybody have any insight into salary and billable requirements for Adams and Reese? Or just culture there in general?

The month before the company announced an optional buyout (quitting for a severance package), from a Team Leader: “they’re telling us that we need to get rid of our lowest performers, so if you see that one of your friends isn’t here one day, you know why”
Folks that worked in a PE-only M&A group - is it harder to go in house anywhere other than a fund? I'm in a PE-only group and every exit I see from my group is to a fund. Meanwhile, people from our M&A group seem to have a much wider set of exits (pubcos, smaller private companies, they even get fund M&A jobs if they want it...). Curious if it's just harder to escape or if it's just selection bias with PE lawyers containing to do what they know. Thanks!

Kendall Jenner accused of cultural appropriation for starting a tequila company. Meanwhile, Jay-Z is a boss for selling half of his champagne company to LVMH. Why is it only cultural appropriation when white people do it? Side note: I loathe the kardashians and agree that they are culture vultures...
