Partner just called and ripped my submitted assignment into pieces. There were conflicting instructions but I genuinely thought I was doing it right. Great feeling this Friday in quarantine.

I learned to not take things personally. Separate yourself from your work. Make sure you have a thick skin so you don’t get dragged down by the legal culture. No matter how it turned out, I’m sure you worked hard on it! Maybe it didn’t come out the way he/she wanted, but you did the work nonetheless. It’s your partner’s fault for not being clear.

Whatever it’s the weeeeeekend 🤪

I agree with this. Work is work, it isn’t who I am, and I’m actively trying to separate my feelings and emotions from it. At the end of the day I work to pay my bills and as long as I’m doing that stably, I need to not let things get to me. This is easier said than done though and still a work in progress- some weeks I need daily reminders.

I have no soul so I literally would just not care. Simple as that. Long as I know I put my full effort into it.

I’d thank your partner for the feedback and ask what you can improve for next time. Shows you don’t take it personally (even if you do), shows you are proactive, and hopefully that will inspire your partner to give more constructive feedback next time.

Most of us have been there - you’re in good company. I echo the advice to not take it personally. That advice applies both in the workplace and beyond, but it’s the hardest to actually accept and put into practice. Learn from it, beat yourself up a little, but then leave it behind and move on.

When I was a summer associate I received the following feedback: “This is the worst piece of legal writing I have ever seen.” 26 years later, I still remember that bit of constructive criticism.

Yes, well, be that as it may. Sometimes people say stupid things. And sometimes people do so quite often. But sometimes it’s the nice guy that stabs you in the back and the guy that says stupid things that has your back.

Leave those feelings in the part of your apartment that is now your office and ignore them until Monday when you have to go back to that corner

What exactly do you mean when you say “ripped... into pieces”

like

I am just trying to understand whether you were actually destroyed or whether you’re making it seem worse than it was

We could offer better advice if you explain what “ripped to pieces” means. If the partner just yelled at you or said “this is garbage” then he or she was being both unhelpful and an a-hole. If he or she went through it with you and explained what’s wrong with it and what you need to do to fix it, you should pay close attention to, and be very thankful for, the feedback.

Battling imposter syndrome during job search. I’m 2.5 years out and just started applying/interviewing for a new position. I have been at the same firm since 2L (different summer positions though) doing primarily plaintiff PI/WC. I have a ton of litigation experience but I feel like I lack substantive experience/knowledge outside WC/PI. I’m interviewing at defense civil lit firms now who seem receptive but I feel wildly under qualified. Anyone else go through this? Advice?

To those who practice bankruptcy: think I can get my Federal law loans forgiven in a Chapter 7 if I haven’t been able to get law jobs after graduating almost half a decade ago and objectively give up on the law to go back to retail? It’s probably time for me to stop trying but I also can’t deal with a third of a million dollars debt over my head if I’m earning sales associate wages at a retailer.

I’m a fourth-year associate who just got an offer to go in house. My experience is in litigation but I’d be working on more corporate matters, which scares me. But I hate billables and firm culture and the in-house company is a huge company where you can make moves in once you’re there.

My salary would be the same but I’d get better benefits and bonus opportunities in house. Plus I’m a mom and will have on-site childcare. Should I be scared that switching from litigation will be boring?

Should I do it? Help!! TIA
