I can’t afford to retire, inflation has been a killer.
Inflation? lol, noh. Tell us the truth, did you mean depreciable assets has been a killer?
Retired last year at 37. Have been doing some travel round the world with spouse and kids to figure out where we’d like to live long term. Planning to spend the next 2-3 years doing this before kids start proper school (currently have a 1 and 4 year old).
Once we’ve settled on a place will pick up some passion projects like working for a non-profit or join a startup. Already have an exec coaching license so doing it on the side now for fun since I like helping people develop.
That said though - I know we’re not the norm but have been focused on FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) since discovering the concept when I hit 30. So my spouse and I then did everything we could to speed up hitting our FIRE target so that we could spend the rest of our lives doing what we want rather than be stuck in the corporate grind.
It’s been almost a year - no regrets so far.
Really insightful and inspiring! Thank you so much for sharing
50. Married rich. No plans except to be done with this nonsense.
Curious how you define rich - and will you be comfortable returning with assets that don’t belong to you?
As soon as I make $5M with a cashflow of about $200k per year before full retirement benefits kick in at 60.
Currently at $3M at 53 years of age. Late bloomer.
Retirement accounts (401k, etc.) get to $5M. And other cash flows (bank deposits, pensions, etc.) get me $200k annually. Need the cashflow to bridge the gap before 62.
Was planning on 55 but it may become 58 for other reasons. Even when I retire from FT work, I will have to work PT so I don't go insane. I can only play so much golf.
It’s true. I could play today but choose to do somethings for work, even though they could wait until Monday.
As soon as my father-in-law dies 💰
I feel this. Except I’ll probably be past 60 by the time he kicks it.
My plan was 55, but I don’t think I can make it that long. 52 is the earliest I can retire.
Retire at 60 and manage the rental properties as my main job. Wouldn’t turn down a director role if offered.
How are you thinking about retiring with rental props? What does your portfolio look like and what is your portfolio and cash flow target for retirement?
If I work to 57 my youngest kid *should* be out of college and I’ll be ready to call it a career. I have plenty of hobbies to enjoy in retirement.
Retire earlier - why wait until they’re out of college?
Did it at 56. Could have done it 2-4 years earlier but wanted to make sure the kids were on track to make it through college.
MD1 - you should check out the FIRE Financial
Independence Retire Early bowl.
56. That is when my youngest is done with high school. After that, I would like to go back to teaching. To keep my mind sharp.
Not a partner but have $2.5M in investible assets at 45. I want to be financially independent at 50 and take a cush gig. My wife can quit at that point.
I should be able to at 49, but may consider staying another 2 years to build some cushion and ensure smooth handoff to the younger folks who will be stepping into the role.
How young do you need to become partner at to retire at 55?
As soon as my kid leaves for college, I'm done.
