Partners. Do team members just come and go from your perspective? Feeling very disengaged and demotivated… do leaders actually care to talk people through these low points in their careers or is this something we need to figure out on our own? Want to talk it out but feeling like a burden more than anything.

Team members absolutely come and go, but that doesn’t mean I don’t care about them or that I wouldn’t coach or mentor them because they’re “probably gonna leave anyway.” The consulting firm value proposition to employees isn’t complicated. You work hard on sometimes unpleasant tasks or with unpleasant time frames and in return, you learn a lot & build skills that will make you more successful in your career - whether that career keeps you in consulting or not. And I perceive an obligation (and a desire) to uphold my end of that bargain as a leader whether a person’s ultimate path has them staying at my firm or not. It’s the right thing to do & good business sense since many who depart either become direct clients or influence our opportunities.

I don’t know where you work but I (+ almost every partner I know) care about people. We would want to help, even if we were not the right person to talk to. If there is an approachable partner you know, I’d encourage you to have this conversation and open up. It’s harder to do that if you don’t know someone. In that case, maybe a Senior Manager you trust? You’re not alone and it is normal to go through rough spots. At least you are asking for help. The worst thing is to decide you’re alone and no one cares.

I am sorry you’re having a rough time. I hope it passes soon. MD1 gave good advice. I would just add - if you have an existing relationship with a leader, reach out. It is true that many of us have a lot going on and often manage by exception, but based on my experience it doesn’t mean we don’t care or that you’re a burden. Many times, especially now in this virtual world, it is more difficult for us to see that something is off. Give us an opportunity to help you. Hang in there.

Truthfully this varies a lot by leader. There are some great partners of mine who care a lot (as hopefully I do) and spend a good amount of their time coaching and mentoring. There are others who are transactional and see this as a boot camp for most people to spend 2 years and go elsewhere which means they’re unlikely to invest much in people. Ultimately I think the people who invest in others are the ones who really succeed - but our recruiting engine and brand name mean that lots of the less virtuous stick around too. As with anything it’s about finding your people and sticking with them - it’s hard to be just another cog in the machine so building relationships is so important.

I don’t feel like I can speak for the entire Partner/Principal/MD population (!) but from my perspective, team members absolutely do not just ‘come and go.’ I care very much to create space to talk with my teams and often learn as much or more from them than I suspect my counsel gives. Some leaders naturally gravitate to 1:1s, others prefer broader platforms… some are more in the ‘chin up, keep pushing’ category… others more empathetic. In short, choose who you approach thoughtfully. Try to focus in on the root of what’s demoralizing you, and be open to hearing feedback if it’s given (easier said than done, I know). My final suggestion is to do a bit of role play of how the conversation might go with a trusted friend or family member. Talking it through before your discussion can help focus you on the best ways to lay out what your feeling… for me it’s really important to get things out of my head and verbalize them in a safe space first. When I hear things out loud I can discern better what will be productive discussion points vs. not. All the very best to you!

Thank you all! Really needed these words of wisdom. Will try and reach out to my trusted leaders soon…

I imagine it depends on a level. I suspect partners don’t know the bulk of analysts or consultants. There are just too many of them.

Pretty torn between CSR and Amex Gold cards. Ignoring annual fees, I’m torn between points earning potential. With most of my budget going towards discretionary spending (dining, groceries, drinks) the Gold has an appeal, yet CSR’s broader definition for travel might even out the point earning potential (ie covering full cost of one Airbnd for several friends would be a big point generator). Are there any other major factors I might not be considering? I’ve gone thru the TPG review FWIW.

How many points? This morning I had to take care of business (if you catch my drift), but the toilet wouldn’t flush correctly in my hotel room. I needed to leave for the client soon, so I asked the front desk if they could send someone up to take care of it. They said that the maintenance person would be in at 8am (I called the front desk at 7:45am) and that they’d get it taken care of. Long story short, when I get back to the hotel at 6:30 pm it has not been taken care of and now my room stinks

Amex corporate green card or CSR? I’m not seeing many benefits to the Amex and I’m wondering whether I should just stop paying the annual fee and apply for CSR instead and get reimbursed for business expenses from that card. Considering I can only put business reimbursable expenses on the Amex, it’s not accumulating points very fast. Would I be better off consolidating my points on CSR? Amex platinum doesn’t seem like the right move for me right now.
