It’s actually harder before becoming a partner. As a partner, recruiting mid-level leaders to my stuff became a lot easier because it came with a lot more clout than it did in my pre-partner days.
Mostly, I try to work on interesting things and I have cultivated a reputation as a good person to work with. That combination means that people often want to get involved in things I’m doing and it’s a matter of finding the right fits & scaling.
Sell work, create backlog, hire staff to fill… rinse repeat. Promote through the ranks instead of hiring top-down. It’s always easier to hire when you’re growing the business. It’s usually safer bets to hire at junior levels and build talent. Most lateral moves I see at senior levels struggle to make an impact quickly and either wash out or take so long they’re passed by those high potential junior folks you brought in.
Depends on whether your an originator of work or another cog in the machine that generates business
