Income partner at a MidLaw firm. Mid 400 comp, based on origination and billing. But, fully subsidized health insurance and a 36k firm contribution to my 401k, so compared to most, it's more like 500. BigLaw would never make me a partner. Don't care. Love it here. Couldn't imagine leaving. I work normal hours (like 9-5), generally have no stress. My house is paid off. My cars are paid off. My kids go to private school. Have zero debt.

Wow. Which firm? Would love 9 to 5 with that type of pay. Need to make up for being underpaid.

Not going to get into the details, but influential people decide once a year how much each partner gets paid. That’s usually determined by how much credit they can take for generating fees, and that is usually determined by their political influence within the firm. The net result is most partners are in the $400-850k bracket, Maybe 20% in the $850k - $1m bracket, 5% at $2m ish and 1% at $3m+

I’m a non-equity partner and make 150. Comp is determined on hours, originations, realization rate, value added to firm, and other factors. I’m in a mid-size city in the southeastern region where salaries and standards of living are much different (and lower) than a major metropolitan area like NYC, DC, Chicago, etc.

Also curious - when firms advertise their profits per equity partner, is that an amount on top of base pay? Or do partners not have a base pay per se. How much is that average skewed by baller partners or is an accurate amount?

Have an offer I’m going to take start date Dec 13th. Have 360 hours of PTO (don’t ask how I have that much). Was going to take it all at once and take two months between jobs but was advised not to give notice in the middle of an extended PTO like that as it would look bad. What do you guys think? Alternative is I take October and come back in November for 2 weeks to get bonus and then give notice.

Decision - I was out the door of my nationwide ins dfense firm. Was going to top local firm with a lot more clout where everything would be private pay and I’d be more on bigger exposure cases. However, my firm outmatched the new firm, made a much better bonus structure, and said I could do more work with their complex bus lit group. I’d still likely do about 50 percent ins defense but I really like the partners I work for, and I handle own cases/take depos, and get autonomy. Am I right to stay?

Is that the reason why this market is going up? In Mid-June, we sold off to 2394 in ES. We can back for a 2nd test in early July but, rallied and we have rallied ever since. 3375 is the objective, 125 points away, and right at old highs. Do we have to goto old highs before a sell off? Maybe? Buy the 21 (yellow) and 51

Articling student in Canada (8 month internship with potential hireback), currently doing transactional work. I’m WFH and having a hard time building relationships with partners. I’m friendly/chat with associates and am on great terms with one partner who gives me work often, but not much else. The firm “encourages” reaching out to partners to chat, though I’ve tried and been essentially ignored. Partners rarely have enough time to give me feedback, so I feel they don’t have time to chat.
