The grass is not always greener. I left my prior firm that paid market but had a high hours requirement for bonus solely because I didn’t think I would hit it and the new firm guaranteed my bonuses. I loved the firm and the people, and the partners were always available to help. I like the work at my new firm and the people are great, but the partners are never available and I feel like they just tossed me in the ocean and I’m drowning. Midlevel. I’m currently a 2nd year associate in commercial finance. I’ve realized I don’t enjoy a a strictly transactional practice. I enjoyed litigation matters as a summer (particularly the adversarial nature). Also, love talking and advising clients. I don’t want the litigation lifestyle and appreciate the in-house opportunities of transactional. Assuming that I could switch (or lateral), I’m thinking I may enjoy employment (and the ability to defend and train/advise). I appreciate any insight.

Can someone explain to me why biglaw firms don’t “review up” and have junior/mid level associates evaluate senior associates? I understand partners have no interest in hearing the minions gripe, but wouldn’t it be valuable to know if your senior associates—seeking to enter your partnership are good managers and not complete a**holes? I’ve had so many projects mismanaged by clueless senior associates lately and it seems like juniors/mid levels bear the brunt of it, but there’s no recourse.

Does anyone who uses timers to record their time (specifically InTapp) have a recommended way of organizing their preset timers? I’ve been adding with each new case 5 main timers (brief drafting, research, teleconference, etc) assigned to a specific case/matter number. But this seems time consuming? I’ve shifted from a smaller law firm where I kept time in a spreadsheet, so it’s been a bit of a learning curve.

Had an interview last week. Recruiter (who is a recruiter for the firm itself as I applied directly) emailed me today asking how I thought the interviews went. Does this mean anything? Wouldn’t a recruiter only reach out to schedule another round of interviews or to reject you? Haven’t heard back since replying this morning.

How many hours do you aim to bill every week or every day? Everyone talks about months and it’s hard for me to visualize that.

Is it a bad look to accept an offer now and tell the new employer I can only start after the second week of the new year? My current firm gives out bonus at the last week of each year. If I give my notice before the new year, I won’t get the year end bonus. Although it probably won’t be huge, but it’ll certainly be nice to have with all the inflation going on.
