Partners/Associates. How does someone balance the fine line between sending follow up networking emails to people who did not respond to the first networking email (sent pre-pandemic)? Having targeted alumni of my schools, I know people are flooded with emails daily (especially partners) and it may have been poor timing as people are busy. I don’t want to become an annoyance, but I do want to try to connect with fellow alums (with hopes of a job at some point (more than 1 year from now)).

If you are contacting strangers, ie no one connected you, then I would say 2 emails. If they don’t respond, they won’t ever. If you have a common intermediary maybe 1 more. I vaguely remember someone telling me if you get a response from 1 in 10, that’s good.

I have a face to face interview tomorrow and was wondering what the thoughts were wearing a nice knitted sweater instead of a blazer for an interview. My blazers don’t quite fit anymore and it’s not in my budget to buy a new blazer. I have one in mind that’s a turtleneck and can be styled with dress pants nicely. Either that or a cardigan….

Looking for tips on how to manage attorney employees. How to ensure that they take me serious and not see me as an admin. I am an operations manager at a midsize firm. Although I’m in my thirties, I look very young and I get the sense that many tend to view me like their teenage daughter. I’ve found that having an authoritarian management style helps but it does not feel genuine.

I’m at a mid sized regional firm. Partner I work with only wants to do litigation but it doesn’t keep all the associates busy. So, he takes on whatever random projects come he gets calls on, but will say things like “we gotta pretend like we’ve done this a thousand times.” It makes me uncomfortable because we haven’t and it’s specialized things like doing all the filings to establish an HMO (which we don’t do). He then ghosts and we’re left trying to figure it all out. Is this normal?
