Passed over for a promotion a third time, even after doing everything, and more, you’re supposed to? It’s time to GTFO

Im sure women and minorities experience this more than others, however it’s not 100% exclusive to women and POC. It’s happened to me many times as a white (gay) man - the difference is, I left at the first or second infraction. I’m now 2 levels higher and making 2x my former colleagues. Don’t let em fool you - loyalty IS dead. Go make yours sis and get that bread.

D1. I have to respectfully disagree. I am at the top as a partner that leads one of the biggest business units. Over 700 team Members. The unconscious bias is real - don’t downplay it please. I was told 15 years as you are a woman you will have to be a 12 / 10 to make partners whilst a man can be an 8 / 10. Women, visibility minorities, POC, LGTB do get pushed down and there a very real and a very strong resistance to us getting ahead.

Thank you!

Pfft. First time, leave.

Ditto. 3rd strike and I left. Fast forward 18 months and I make 79% more money and work a regular 45-50 hours a week, about 30 hours less than I was before. More money. More impact. More autonomy. More appreciation. More WLB. More than all this, the validation that I was punching above my weight, was providing more value than I was being given credit for and that I am appreciated and acknowledged for it - is what made leaving worth it.

I moved from Big4 Tech Strategy to startup PM to PM at an established company. Leaving to industry helped with the WLB. Coming into PM with consulting experience helped with the autonomy and handling my own work stream. Found each role via LinkedIn, no referrals, just applied and interviewed.

Whenever I see a consistent high proportion of East Asians in our new joiner groups, then look up and see anything but at the leadership level, I can't help but think how much the firm is committed to giving all employees equal opportunities for growth(whether it be mentorship, unconscious bias training, diversity initiatives)

Happened to me, when I left I got a 40k pay bump (actually 60k after bonus came in). If they don’t know your worth, someone else will!!

Firstly the "everything and more" is one person's opinion. But if they can't point to something specific you didn't accomplish, then maybe it's a perception issue. Second, it's a relative scale, ie there are others who checked the boxes but may have done it better. Third, if this is the 3rd time it happened it sounds like 1 and 2 don't apply so time to gtfo.

D1 - Completely agree with you. There is no way to know the complete body of work of another person. If you think you hit all the high notes and still didn’t get promoted, it’s likely that there weren’t enough spots and the ones that did get promoted, truly hit it out of the park. The higher you go, fewer the spots.

Happened to me! After 3rd try, for the promotion and then left Accenture to join FAANG.

Goal posts do move. It’s based on a number of factors - how many SMs can the practice support, how long is the partner pipeline, what is your revenue pipeline, external economic factors, etc. I would say the bar for 2020 SM promotion is higher than what it was in 2019.

Cap1 - Agree that KPIs get set at the beginning of the year but things do change during the year. It’s not always your KPIs that determines the decision, there are other factors especially for SM and above.

Hypothetical that I'm trying to quantify for myself. Say I make $100k and feel I can comfortably spend $2k on rent. Assume for arguments sake, I'm happy at this level with savings, social life, etc. I get a raise to $120k. What can I now afford in rent? A) $2.4k. I got a 20% raise, so I can spend 20% more in rent. B) $3.6k. I got a $20k raise, so I can spend $1.6k (rounded) more in rent. C) Somewhere in the middle Traditional thinking tells me A is correct, but it seems conservative.

Looking for title advice within data roles. My current role is a high level IC, I am looking at other roles and a little uncertain - should I consider Data Science roles, senior data science roles? Data Analyst Roles? Staff/manager data analyst? What would look like a step down ( in the future)? What would look like a lateral move? What titles are a promotion? There seems to be limited amount of standardization between data roles and titles.

Have an offer from Deloitte doing the exact same thing I do at KPMG for 45% more. Partners at KPMG have basically told me they can get close to matching but not until raises happen in October. Should I trust them or jump? Worried about having to build an internal network from scratch at Deloitte but also worried about getting screwed in October and getting like a 10% raise only. M2 if it matters. Thoughts?
