People in luxury buildings - do you also give a holiday gift to the rest of the staff? I’m mainly talking the people who may come in to fix things or for example the guy who mops the lobby every few days?

Yes. Ask the front desk for a list of everyone who works at the building (in my building it’s 15-20ppl) Set aside $50 for each. And split costs with your roommates. If $50 is too much, give that to the doorman and front desk and $25 for everyone else.

but thanks for the tip!

I start a new job in 2 weeks (woohoo!) & I completely forgot to mention to my manager that I have three short pre planned vacations this fall (two long weekends and a week long). I was waiting on confirmations from other folks (all of these will be with friends/fam), which is why I forgot. I’m worried that if I share this with her now, she will already think poorly of me and that I’m trying to get away with abusing the benefits (unlimited PTO). Any advice? Am I thinking too deep into this?

I have family visiting and requested about a month ago for a few days off after Christmas but it wasn’t granted since my other teammate has that time off. The main client we bill to has the entire season off so I’m not sure why I wasn’t given off. I indirectly let my manager know and was advised to hash it out with my team. How would you approach this?

Just had a very uncomfortable conversation with a partner. I have some time off booked to go to my brother’s wedding (I’m the best man). We were chatting and I mentioned that my brother’s future husband is so nice and really a great guy, and we already consider him a member of our family. Partner’s tone immediately shifts and as we’re ending the call he says, “Okay, enjoy the time with your family at the civil ceremony.” Like… girl you live in California, you cannot be this backward.

Have you been fired before even starting your new job?

I signed for a new job two months ago and will start next month (3 mo notice period in Europe). They were very keen on getting me on-board ASAP before signing but since I signed the contract it has been silent from the new employee. I've emailed them with questions as I'll be re-locating to NL and it takes them 1-2 weeks to reply. Given all that's going on in the world, I'm worried they might fire me before I even start.

My previous secretary still does all of my reimbursements/travel (don’t ask for help with anything else) and will until the new year, but my new secretary has made a clear effort to be available (even though I haven’t utilized her at all).

My wife and I are considering relocating to a new city. I’ve been working with a recruiter who (I thought) gave me a good lay of the land. Which firms to meet with re lateral opportunities, which to avoid, etc. I’ve since spoken with a friend who has connections at other firms that could be a better fit. Do I bring in my recruiter or reach out through connections? Is using a recruiter beneficial to me, or am I better off on my own? How does their fee play in to what I could get as a package?

I posted before: I long thought I was NYC for life, but the disparity between taxes and services was beginning to weigh on me. I can't pay MORE in taxes and receive LESS in services than everywhere else in the country. Our streets are dirtier and our trashcans overflowing. Our shelters and public housing are a disgrace, and many homeless are on the street. Our police are handcuffed by progressive BS, and safety is becoming a distant memory.

And I hadn't even yet thought about our schools. .
