People of FB, I would appreciate some feedback here. H1B sponsored workers, for or against? Do you think they are taking jobs away from U.S. Professionals?

We get the smartest hardest working people from all over the world to fill our corporations, hospitals, and academic institutions. Oh, and because we have rights and resources here, they stay and populate the next generation with smart hardworking AMERICAN kids.
That is the beauty of our nation.
My dad worked his ass off to get to this country. He worked his ass off once he got here. He went from growing up dirt poor to retiring a (small) millionaire. Paid for 5 kids to go to private school and college, even though when he was in college he was starving and couldn't keep up his grades to keep is scholarship. 4 out of 5 of us have graduate degrees; my oldest sibling just became C-suite; my 1 sibling who didn't go to grad school is very successful. We all contribute money and time to charity. We are raising smart and kind 2nd generation Americans.
You know what makes America great? Those people on H1-B visas.

We fill in the jobs that Geology and Philosophy majors can't. Didn't even realize before coming to the US 20 years ago that those were even options to waste your parents money on. We F1 folks who later switch to H1 learned the value of long term investment even before we knew how to spell it. Unless we were majoring in Finance, Engineering, Medicine or Tech our parents would have shipped us to a mental asylum. So given that we H1B folks start thinking about our careers and long term goals when you are in Elementary we kind of deserve the chance to prove ourselves in this land of opportunity and help move the country forward. Its only when ignorant people like Donald Trump who need to ignite a race war for their personal benefit do they use us as scapegoat.

As my immigrant parents would say, "Maybe your artsy friends should have studied something useful?"

I am a h-1b/green card. I have been paying taxes in the us for 10 years. I went to a US college and was hired for my technical skills. I say let's move forward and integrate immigrants into American life. That said, I have liberal artsy friends who have had a very hard time in the job market.

Lol son, don't go around blaming H1-Bs for the lay offs. For 1, that's racist; 2, that's racist; 3, that's racist.

Agree with all of the above. I am losing my job because I did not get lucky in the H1-B lottery and know others in the same situation. This is a loss for the firm (it invested in us) and arguably the country. If there had been equally or better qualified Americans for our jobs they would have gotten the offer over us. As it is employers take a gamble every time they hire someone in need of H1-B sponsorships. HOWEVER, there is also abuse in the system, where consulting firms (none of the ones on FB) apply for H1-Bs for people who are basically then rented out for cheap as staff aug. Those jobs I would argue are in fact taken away from Americans, because those temporary workers are working for much lower salaries and don't always intend to immigrate.

To put things in perspective though, the H1-B program is capped at 85,000 a year. That is a pretty small number given the size of the US economy (which added 287,000 jobs in June)...

If I had enough of those skillsets here, we wouldn't need these programs. They aren't doing jobs Americans won't do but rather jobs they can't do.

like

D1 yes. No jobs for English majors.

like

Yup. Companies often use H1Bs not for skilled labored where there isn't a qualified US citizen but for cheap labor.

Also there was a thread from an h-1 guy who was laid off a few days ago😝

It makes no sense tome that we would have people study here then not actually benefit from it economically by having them work here. It makes even less sense when you train an employee for a year or two then make them leave. On the plus side for a company, if they do get h1-b, you get labor that is stuck with you until you sponsor them for green card.

I really have trouble believing fresh undergrads/masters are competing with 50 year old engineers for jobs. The undergrads may help hasten the skill set of the 50 yo being outdated/duplicated, but I can't imagine it is the same role.

like

I find it amusing that some folks are such victims of their ego that they believe what they do cannot be done by a US citizen and its not about keeping labor costs down.....,I know what you do, and it's not genome sequencing

P4 is exactly what's wrong with our generation. Why can't you work past 7? There are people hungrier than you with the same capabilities, working for same or less, it makes more sense to higher the person who is not you.

like

P4, first, thank you for serving. If immigrants are what this country was built on, US military personnel are what the whole world is standing on.
I'm damn proud of this country and grateful every day for being an American; we wouldn't be here and spreading our values without our veterans.
My point is, we can't complain if someone is willing to work harder than us. I agree with work life balance, and seek it too. But our economy has always been built on dog-eat-dog survival of the fittest.

The start date on LCA is 12/06, but I might get an approval from USCIS next week itself.
**Can I join the other firm before 12/06?

Even with full 2 weeks of notice period, I will be free by 11/20. Wondering if I can join the other firm sooner

Hello, I’m a Florida-barred attorney practicing family law for the past 6 mos. I left my job as an associate at a solo firm last week.
