People on here are talking about billable hours and utilization... are those things that are tracked on an individual basis? We do it as a firm aggregate and thought that was the norm, but seems to be that it might be tied to specific people at other firms?

Yep and yep; most firms outside MBB do it at the individual level (so you’re not really incentivized to be on the beach)

like

Or if you're at Deloitte, PTO, firm holidays, training, and bench time all count against utilization. Super fun especially when you're on capped GPS projects!

like

Not only do they have to worry about their individual utilization, they have mostly ineffective resource managers that do little to nothing to help with staffing. Most of the firms will therefore tout a pithy like “own your career” which means network and 💋 ass to find your project.

likefunny

This happens at Accenture and it's a nightmare. The worse part is when projects don't give you a charge code for BD (despite fighting for it) and it comes back to reflect badly on you during performance discussions

like

Variable based on the firm.

Deloitte, for example, tracks it individually and it's a key performance metric. Booz Allen, on the other hand, does track it individually but it doesn't really become a performance metric until you're at the senior associate (senior manager) level on up and then it's a team metric, unless things have changed since I left.

The regional firm I'm at now, conversely, doesn't track utilization at any level.

Oh my god sign me up. I would die for like, one effing time period without having to fret over utilization.

That moment when your "smart" plan to boost your hours this month by working the Labor Day weekend (thus turning down all the fun plans your friends made) becomes sitting on your hands & feeling dumb because all the partners are too busy to delegate anything. I’ve worked the last nine years for my state legislature as an attorney analyst, drafting and analyzing proposed legislation. I’ve primarily worked on health professional regulations. Next year, I will apply for student loans forgiveness under the public service program and would like a change. I know others who have gone into lobbying/government relations, but I would like to find other options to pursue. I’ve never done billable work so not sure if law firm life is for me. Any suggestions?

So, I'm happy at my current job and have been there about 18 months. Our pay is probably 15% below market (AmLaw 100) but so are our billable requirements. An interview for another firm kind of fell into my lap, and I'm debating whether to take it just for the sake of seeing what market really is. Is there something shady about interviewing somewhere you're not totally committed to accepting an offer from?

Question re: salary. I’m thinking about accepting an offer at a small (4-6 attorneys) transactional firm. I would primarily be working on NDAs for clients. The role sounds great (no billable hours, fully remote, flexible hours/ can work from anywhere); however, the salary is $70K. I’m a new attorney, with only one year of experience. Does this salary seem low? If so, any advice on what someone in my position should ask for?

A reminder to those who are stressed about your billable hours that your value is more than your pure productivity. To those stressed about relationships, relationships are hard even for non-lawyers, but you are absolutely worthy of love. It is an important reminder for all of us that you are worthy and you are valuable. Keep fighting!

Would love everyone’s thoughts! Which of these two options would you pick if your goal is to buy and hold for appreciation purposes given these are in a very hot market. Both same lot size.

Option 1:
- $175k lot located on very busy street but across the street from new $700k townhomes and restaurants

Option 2:
- $250k 3 bed/1 bath fixer upper located at end of dead end street, houses on street all fixer uppers, located down the street from Option 1 (so also near new builds and restaurants)

I switched to my current role with the verbal agreement that I would be third teir support - there will always be someone else between the customer and me. I recently found out that a new distributor doesn't want to stand up a support desk to do that for at least a year, leaving my team as first point of contact if anything goes wrong with a system.

Am I in a position where I can ask to renegotiate my compensation, even through I don't have a written job description?

My friend who I have known for 10 years recently became really weird about paying me back for things and I’m not sure how to handle it. We went to a group dinner and everyone paid me back but her, I assumed she forgot and let it go. We went out to grab a drink yesterday, I had one glass of wine, she had 3 cocktails and then ordered a meal, when the bartender asked how we wanted to split the check she quickly said “you can just split it evenly”. I ended up paying $55 for my glass of wine (cont)
