People on here asking if it’s ok to take off time for the holidays or if they’re sick...seems like something may be wrong with this profession as a whole if these are common questions :(

I have literally worked every day this year and don't know how to ask for time off.

A1 - I wish. I won't even hit my billable target because I spent April, May, and half of June doing mostly non-billable work (firm assigned, non-creditable). I think my job is actually on the line, and my raise and bonus definitely are.

All about setting boundaries. Helps to have paid off all debt and have a decent nest egg, though (before someone calls me privileged I did six years in the Marines and used the GI bill for law school so you can F right off with that crap). I know that any day I can just say F you and be fine. I work hard and put in a lot of hours, but I protect my weekends to the extent possible plus holidays, and take a few week-long vacations per year. Nobody on their death bed ever says they wish they worked more. To each their own, just my perspective.

I agree. It appears to be looked down upon to take any time off by these partners/firms - especially during covid when associates are expected to bill/work 24/7. We are all incredibly burned out and yet the message is still “well you better make your hours this month.”

Yet they all chose this, knowing the rules. Not like it’s any big secret how the life is.

I got *major* surgery on a Tuesday, scheduled specifically around a lull in my group’s schedule, and still had a partner calling me that Friday to “brainstorm”, even after I’d told her I’d had complications and was still not at all recovered. The following Monday she sent me a nastygram saying it seemed like I had been slacking recently. Time off is not a thing.

I lost my grandfather this week but I haven’t taken time off (we’re all working from home) or told anyone at my firm because I feel like they’ll think it’s a lie

I’m so sorry to hear that :( please take the time you need to heal. If your firm doesn’t understand, not somewhere you want to be.

Amen my colleague

I’d planned to take the week between Christmas and New Years off, but I’m in the doghouse at work and have a lot of shit piled on between now and the first week of January... I’ve haven’t had a day off since February and have cancelled the two long weekends I scheduled (wasn’t planning on going anywhere, just not working).

I’m realizing I have a lot of fear—mostly related to health stuff and death. Feel like people are getting sick left right and center (not talking about covid). I’ve never had anyone close to me become very sick or die—don’t know what I would do if this happened. I’m also overly concerned about my health and seem to be at the doctor every month to get something checked. Can anyone relate or provide suggestions on how to overcome something like this?

Junior working with ex v5 senior in M&A. He consistently asks me to turn major deliverables at the worst hours, think 10 pm Friday/Sat/Sun night “tonight” or “by tomorrow morning” even when there is no closing date in sight. When I push back he says my behavior is unacceptable. The times when I have been able to actually meet his expectations and give him the deliverable for review, he will get back to me with comments at least a week later. Sick of these false deadlines. Help
