How long have you been in consulting? I think you should really think hard about the skills that you have specifically, and what areas your projects have focused on, and aim for those. You can also aim for higher levels/titles when you leave. I felt similarly when I was looking, but it was partially due to the fact my projects/skills weren’t very focused in a particular area, so I didn’t have the level of expertise that they were looking for. I ended up switching my resume completely and focused on the technical skills I had instead and interviewed more for dev/data roles, and started getting interviews for jobs that paid a good deal more than I had been making.
But if there’s a specific area of focus that your projects have been in, you might be able to leverage that knowledge to go into a company utilizing that specific domain skills
I suspect the biggest bumps when you leave consulting for industry occur in the 5-12 exp range (upper level senior consultant/manager levels). At that point you have leadership experience in addition to your hard skillsets but you haven’t reached equity or ED level where your consulting pay really adds up.
What do you currently make now, and what jobs are you applying for?
So... you’re overpaid now?
Really? I thought it was the opposite. Obviously it depends on your level, the situation.. the industry
And honestly - I know from interviewing there are plenty of (big) companies that will think you will happily take less to be off the road. (Just don’t assume a big increase is always the norm)!
So I’m a consultant now, but I’m applying for hsbc I thought a big bank would pay more but it’s almost identical
Same! I have 2 years of experience and I haven’t found anything that paid significantly more
