People that’ve switched from Big 4 to industry or vice versa, could you share the reason for your switch, and if you regret the move? And which level were you when you made the change?

Went from B4 to industry. I was SM in B4 and joined industry as the head of tax. I do miss certain aspects of the consulting world but overall happy with the switch. I feel like I should have jumped a couple years ago to save the brain cells that I still have left. Now I spend more time on my personal life like hobbies, family, planning trips, staying connected with friends that I had put on pause the last 10 years. Now when I’m not at work, I don’t get the constant feel of having to check my emails or not thinking about getting in front of the laptop to review something. All in all, I feel like I’m getting better (mentally).

Was mid level firm, left for industry, went back to public when PwC recruited me to come to them as a manager. Only reason I said yes was because my industry position (also manager) did not have international opportunities so I told Pdubs the only reason I was coming to work for them was so I could transfer abroad in 1-3 years. That worked, I moved abroad, overall was with PwC for 5 years and then I quit in 2021 to freelance consult. But I’m waiting for an offer to arrive in my inbox right now from a dream industry position. I hate PA and love industry - it is so much more challenging in industry for my specific field of tax niche topic.

Tax transparency - or global tax information reporting as it is sometimes called. It’s about customer and business partner (supplier, counter parties, lenders, etc) taxes than the taxes of a corporation itself. Form 1099 / 1042-S reporting is one example but it covers a lot more than that. I get to spend most of my day not working with accountants / tax people - that’s my favorite part. I work with product development, IT infrastructure, marketing, customer service, project management, and more.

Also went from big4 to industry. Left at the SM level and got a director level position to do tax planning. Much like above, much better personal life and mental health (and got a decent bump to leave as well). Likely could have been partner if I had stayed.

Similar to some others I left B4 as a sr manager for a tax director position. It was a great experience. I wanted a better work/life balance and to focus on family. I found the work/life balance to be somewhat better and found the experience of working in corporate worthwhile and educational from a tax and business perspective. I also learned more about myself and determined that the variety and challenges of PA, along with the collaborative culture with a lot of great resources, is a better fit for me.

Would appreciate advice for next career steps. Currently in Risk&Reg advisory and looking to switch to Strategy consulting (at PwC/Big 4). From what I've read, the transition seems unlikely because of little work overlap and the preference for top MBAs. It seems like the most realistic ways forward are 1) Get MBA first then request to transfer groups, or 2) Leave the firm for Strategy experience elsewhere and get back into Big 4 eventually. Has anyone made a similar move into Strategy?

New consultant here - when people talk about Strategy & Operations, what exactly is the operations side and what do they do?
