People who have done (or know of people who have done) secondments: Have you had or heard of any bad experiences? I’ve been seeing mostly positive posts with doing secondments, but would appreciate any insight on bad experiences. Please share size of organization and industry. Thanks!

I wouldn’t say my experience was bad as I made a few good connections but I was bored. I’m an M&A attorney and was brought on to assist with the company’s customer contracts. My firm was also not clear on how long I was needed. I felt like I was missing out on growing and developing as an M&A attorney the longer I was away. Fortunately, Covid actually brought my secondment to an end after having been there for 6 months. It was at a F200 company in the manufacturing space.

I went client side and am miserable - it’s madness on this side. Have made it 90 days and would prefer not to make it more than 120 - but we’re in a pandemic. Half of the problem is that I “onboarded” remote and the onboarding was TERRIBLE. The other thing is that there is no process and I’m on a team full of managers who have spent 15 years at this company and have no availability to talk to me with a day full of meetings. I’d prefer not to quit without a backup but I cry every day.

I was promoted from Supervisor to

salary I feel undervalued and

Whoever said employers don’t care about grades and transcripts after your first job was a liar. Every lateral position that I’ve applied to as a 3rd year has requested transcripts. Why do we lie and tell grads that employers don’t check transcripts when they do. My coworker, a 5th yr, had to submit his transcripts also to lateral job. Side note - it speaks volume when multiple associates are trying to lateral at the same time

How does hourly contract lawyering work? I’m on a contract through a recruiting firm before the company hires me directly. My pay is hourly but I get time and a half for over time. Do I include that on my timesheet??

This is the most basic question, so yep, I’m asking you to take it easy on me when you reply. I have been practicing for about 5 years total. I have been in civil practice for 2 years. These 2 years have been the most demoralizing, unfulfilling 2 years of my life. I have been giving myself pep talks to find the “positive” spin on it but firm life isn’t for me. I know networking is key but do you have some thoughts/suggestions on how to make an exit...crying at therapy is becoming too much.

Having my weekly crisis here. I feel like I’ve ruined my career by doing insurance defense at the same firm for 8 years. The only options seem to be the miserable sweatshop ID shops everyone says to steer clear from. Thinking about a career change to selling cars so I can make more money. Really having a meltdown
