Fired from consulting. Joined in a full time position industry one month after, switched to contractor with them for 2.5 years : lived in 2 countries, got divorced and remarried with a better man. Came back to the country in a full time position in the same company. Quit to go back in consulting. Doubled my salary in 3 years, 10x my happiness. Better life personally and professionally: more aligned with my values and expectations. Learnt a lot (like a new language, how to live through uncomfortable situations ) but also know better myself now and my limits.
Take it, do it. Better live with remorse than regrets.

Took the alternate path: Failed out of prestigious university at 19 years old. Partied and was addicted to drugs and alcohol for most of my 20’s. Sobered up at 27 - went back to school at local college. Graduated with Computer Science degree. Worked in industry for 9 months. Took the knowledge from industry and landed first consulting gig. Have been consulting now for two years and make the same salary as my “age peers” except they have 6-8 years more years of experience than I do. More than money or prestige I value my relationships, my integrity, and feel grateful that I’m not dead…which is the path I was headed down.

Left my very steady career at 31 for a FT MBA after ending a toxic 10 year relationship. I now make ~3x my previous salary and am married to a better man with a new baby.
Best risks I ever took.

C5- regular old consulting; just jumped to another firm for more $$!

This is a consulting bowl, no one here has taken risks

Husband started his own company to bill himself out - ended up growing with employees and a software product - and now we’re retired at 35/36

Wow! That’s a dream coming true!

Quit consulting 1 year out of college without anything lined up. Ended up joining a startup that is now a unicorn

likeupliftingsmart

Researched startups in my city on sites like crunch base and angel list and just made a list of companies I thought had an interesting product or service, then looked at any somewhat relevant roles they were hiring for. Cold applied to a place and somehow got an offer. Been a crazy few years

I left consulting 4 years in for Google for a 50% raise. Doubled my total income 4 years later to 350k.

Changing jobs is definitely a risk.

Yoloed Tesla option 10x over while I was in college/now. 2 yoe work experience yet I live in a Luxury 1B1B apartment in Boston, nice car, no room mates, etc. not thing crazy(clothing or watch wise) but Life is good. Decent salary progression. WSBets degenerate gambling went well. Now I do less risky stuff. No need to go all in again.

Awesome! I did something similar, not as much money as you, but rewarded myself (for the progress/success I’ve had over the past 4 years) with a luxury apartment and still got a great deal on it with concessions.

I took no risks and stayed in a simple career path, make great money and have a happy complete life, rife with travel, excitement, and the things I seek

Yeah, I've been in the same job since undergrad. Did a part time MBA and didn't switch.

But I make good money, I like my work life balance and travel time. It's been safe, but I've been fortunate that I haven't been penalized for being safe.

I could probably make more money jumping around... Maybe I'll do that someday if I get really really bored, but I'm pretty comfy right now.

I gambled 200k day trading GameStop and AMC in January and exited that party after two weeks with 500k profit (700k balance).

60k of that profit was in 10 minutes while I was laying in bed pre-market hours. Bought 10k shares of AMC at 17 as it was running, dumped it at 23, 10 minutes later. I was very lucky, as it dropped back down to 10 not very long after that.

My wife and I took a student loan 84x our annual income to attend business school not knowing whether We’d be able to land jobs in the US to pay for it due to H1B lottery. We both landed jobs and are now making 150x our pre b-school income. Greatest ROI ever

Cancelled my final rounds at Monitor senior year to go work at a series of hot tech companies/startups, each of which ended with layoffs. Then did an entrepreneurial venture that didn’t work out. Derisked by taking 12 years of Life Sciences jobs developing expertise which led to many years of doing independent consulting, earning 2-3x. Debating now whether to grow my business or go lead a practice at a larger firm.

thought this belonged here

To laugh is to risk appearing a fool,
To weep is to risk appearing sentimental.

To reach out to another is to risk involvement,
To expose feelings is to risk exposing
your true self.

To place your ideas and dreams
before a crowd is to risk their loss.

To love is to risk not being loved in return,
To hope is to risk despair,
To try is to risk to failure.

But risks must be taken because
the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing.

The person who risks nothing, does nothing,
has nothing is nothing.

He may avoid suffering and sorrow,
But he cannot learn, feel, change, grow or live.

Chained by his servitude he is a slave
who has forfeited all freedom.

Only a person who risks is free.

Great question, interesting answers.

I wonder: why is financial success such a central element in most responses?

Nothing wrong with the big bucks, I get you, but I still find it remarkable to observe how despite so many other parameters shaping our happiness and well-being, it’s the 💰💰💰 that’s mentioned first and foremost. 🤷‍♂️
