Performance improvement plan: is this always the “writing on the wall” and basically goodbye? Has anyone recovered from this in real life? Have serious personal and mental problems and wondering if I should even sweat it for the 30 days or not worth trying (because trying will take all the energy that is left really - not bc I’m lazy).

I would use the time to look for a new job. I don’t know anyone who has “graduated” from a performance improvement plan and at my firm they are used to signal to an associate that they should be looking elsewhere. Most people who leave are much happier where they end up though. So try to stay positive.

Thank you!

We had an associate who was put on a PIP twice. This year past year the associate really stepped it up and is getting a great review and bonus. There’s a chance to turn it around if you if what to stay at the firm.

Interesting! Thanks for your input.

I was on a rebranded PIP. So I actually don't know if it was a PIP but it was a plan for performance development. I found the plan itself to be super unhelpful and actually unproductive because it just made me feel bad. But I did have to make the decision to commit to my firm and work hard there rather than look elsewhere. It's worked out not bc of the PIP, but because when my workload increased I really stepped up.

Also, the PIP said it will be placed in my personnel file - can that hurt me in the future?

Day 1 after my PIP with the mean partner who placed me there. I (in an email): there is X. Please note that I remember about Y and it is not here because Y was intended for another matter. Thanks. —- Calls me: well you mention Y and that you could not provide it to me. Why not, and when will you be able to add Y? Me: as I explained in the email, there is no Y bc it belongs to another matter - would you disagree? Partner: hm, and this was in your email? You said it like that? me: Yes. partner: Let me check. Opens and reads. Oh yes, and yes, I agree, Y should not be here.
