Personal injury attorneys, do you like it? Thinking of moving from ID

ID was my first job in law. I got out pretty early and went into commercial litigation. ID is easy, repetitive work BUT, in my view most ID shops underpay and overwork their people. Insurers make terrible clients. So much of your time gets cut, they refuse to pay for things, and they require admin work that isn’t billable. There are a lot of areas I would pivot to before I went back to ID.

Trying to get out. Where did you end up?

Personally no because I despise going through medical records- but not billing time is nice.

I’m not an attorney but as someone who was in the medical field going through medical records is my favorite… I find them so interesting.

Always been a plaintiff PI attorney (pre-lit and lit) since getting my license and I absolutely love it.

Pros: no pay ceiling (if you’re working for commissions), no billable hours, fighting for victims, the work is interesting

Cons: clients are a pain (I’d say 30-40% of them), workloads/caseloads are usually high, a lot of defense attorneys are robotic so it can be uninspiring to work against some of them.

How many times would you your boss/managing attorney scream/berate you (not just frustration) before you quit? Some context: Yesterday morning managing attorney comes in legitimate screaming at me because I forgot (for the first time in over a year of employment) to lock the door when I arrived, he then brings up something that happened earlier in the week where I didn’t get clients payment info, instead emailed assistant to run payment since I’ve never been taught how to accept payment.

I’m currently a junior associate in a boutique litigation firm handling IP. I’ve taken a depo already, will argue in court next month and by all accounts, I am great at it. But I’m miserable. I find the games with opposing counsel exhausting and I despise writing briefs (even if I’m good at it). My pre-law school job was in public relations and I chose litigation because I like to win, but I’m now realizing I like success more than the win-lose. Feeling lost… should I move to transactional?

Annual review advice?
I feel very secure in my long-term employment and am doing very well. I work at a midsized boutique with a generally solid culture. I’ve been described as “rising star/golden child” etc., glowing reviews. The thing is that I’ve had a tough year with absent mentors, low interaction/training (there are extenuating circumstances with my SA.) Do I mention what changes I need to see to stay here? Or just go along, accept my good reviews and bonus, and keep my head down?

Advice needed! I started at an ID firm only a few months ago after a long stint doing in-house litigation. I was referred to the firm by a very good friend who also still works there. A management position at my old in-house firm has now been offered to me. Higher salary obviously and no billables. I am seriously dreading talking to my new boss and telling my friend that I want to go back in-house. Has anyone dealt with something similar? I just feel so bad and don’t want to burn bridges

Recalling my first onboarding meeting in-house with the c - suite. Thinking back now recalling that they would often mention if someone they are referring to is a woman. For example, "Oh we have these two women doing x, y, and z and they do it well, a well-oiled machine." etc. I was the only woman in the room. They did not mention when someone performing a particular role was a man but they did point out when it's a woman, happened about four times. Odd, no? What would you make of this?

Anyone have three kids and working in big law? I just found out I’m pregnant with no. 3 and it’s been a lot trying to juggle morning sickness, but based on my experience, I know this is only the tip of the iceberg of what’s to come. My husband and I are elated, but the anxiety of being a mom of 3 kids and working in big law is preventing me from truly enjoying this news. It would be good to know what it’s really like having 3 kids so that I can evaluate how long I really have left in big law.

I’ve been asked to weigh in on how to improve my firms parental leave policy. It’s currently 8 weeks paid for birth parent with an extra week for each year at the firm (up to 12 weeks total) and 2 weeks paid for non-birth parent. I’m in a major city, firm is a boutique that has been around a very long time. What would you suggest? Any studies or research you’ve seen recently on trends in parental leave policies also helpful. I’d like to have some sort of data to back up what I recommend. TIA!

Associates, how did you balance your morning sickness and fatigue in early pregnancy with work? Thankfully I’m still WFH, but worried about receiving insane turnarounds that require me to stay up late/all night and the effect it might have on the baby. Question for moms. I’m getting married next year and have several close family members that will have babies ages 8-11 months old by then. What are some ways I can support the moms and make it an enjoyable experience for them? We have a separate room at the venue that I was thinking could be offered to the parents to use, or potentially hiring a babysitter for them (either at the venue or back at the hotel). I would love for the families to be able to come, as it is out of town.
