I’m interviewing for jobs that would essentially lead to a minor career pivot. I have gotten to 4 straight final rounds (4-5 interviews and a presentation for each company) to be told I’m second choice in favor of someone with more experience. I’m losing my mind and so tired of interviewing tbh. What can I do differently, or do I just need to chill out and wait for a company to say yes?

I’ve been practicing for 5 years and am getting burnt out on firm life. I would love to go in house but I don’t really have the traditional practice background - I’ve done mostly professional liability, with some labor and employment. Is going in-house a total pipe dream? Should I be looking to go to another firm and try to shift practice areas instead? Any and all opinions welcome!

I just had a performance review at a biglaw firm. It was my first review since I lateraled from a small firm in my 6th year of practice. The review was very positive and the panel went through all the comments left by the partner reviewers, except one. One partner said: “showed he is able to perform at the level of a partner.” He’s the only partner to have said that. Anything to read into based upon the way this comment was ignored? Do they worry I’ll get presumptuous if they acknowledge it?

I am looking to leave my very small law firm firm and considering going to a much larger firm. I have some clients that were brought in by other partners but I am deeply entrenched in their work. It would not be easy for another lawyer to get up to speed, but the client contact is technically with another lawyer and I am working with that lawyer also on the file. I also have one client where we could really use some more bodies on the file. More in comments.

Business generation is going to be the bane to my existence. I’m a highly regarded mid level at my firm (in terms of work product), but my colleagues (that are, quite frankly, incompetent) seem to be getting further ahead solely due to the business they bring in, which is usually attributed to their wealthy friends/family businesses. I do networking everywhere I go, but I just can’t seem to land the commercial clients I need. Any advice?
