Pet peeve having someone at the business team email Friday afternoon and asking if I'll have a turn of the documents done this afternoon because they want to send them out this afternoon even though that timeline was never communicated before!

This will depend a lot upon your relationships internally with this group and your relationships with your boss. If they are always this sloppy, and your boss knows you to be diligent but busy then it is appropriate to quickly confirm receipt and you will put resources on this at your earliest opportunity. This shows you are responsive and still noncommittal.
If, however, this is a one-off, and your boss expects you to respond by promptly dropping other matters, then you have to jump on this and complain about it later over a glass of brown water.

You need to CYA and reply all that you can try to take a quick look but will frankly need more time to do a proper review.

I don’t think they’re asking for review of “business points”, it’s a business person asking for a full legal review and revision of the contract. That’s what it would be for me in this scenario, at least.

But—how long will it take to turn these docs for business stuff? I’d imagine your assistant could probably take care of that with a markup you’d approve.

funny

“A turn of the documents” is hard to read as anything but full legal review and revision

The real question is whether there’s an actual need for this to go out today beyond your internal client’s sense of order.

If so, you bite the bullet and knock it out and accept the fact that this job sucks sometimes.

If not, it’s time to decide if this is the right time to set some boundaries. One of the great joys that I find in working in-house is that I very rarely have to deal with rushing document turns. I mean, I’m compulsive, so I tend to do it anyway, but having the option of saying “I won’t be able to get to that today but should be able to finalize on Tuesday” has been liberating.

Of course, status of the internal client matters too.

Then flex those boundary muscles!

Are you in-house or outside counsel? Couldn’t tell from the post

One of the best things In-house departments can do is put forth a written policy of turn around times. Get your other G&A depts onboard and have them also put their own out. And then you need to stick to them. The sales douches will ignore them. Make them bleed and humiliate them in front of their boss’s boss.

Sure there are always a few emergencies. But many items stem from lack of prior planning by others and expecting you to just jump

Hi all,
Has anyone here transitioned from an engineering role into consulting without first getting a MBA? How was your experience?

I’m an engineering consultant (>2YOE) in a very niche specialisation and I’m thinking of transitioning into consulting. In my current role, the work is really good but $ is not justified (once you hit that >2-4 YOE) compared to effort (hours+constant learning) you have to put in, liabilities, etc.

Any and all insights are appreciated! :)

Can Atlassian allows to work from Hyderabad instead of Bangalore ? I am having interview scheduled with atlassian for Bangalore location. But if i selected for the same position, I would like to work from Hyderabad location only. Is that possible ? Can someone please help on this ?

I love working at the bookstore and I'm proud to work with such a large group of people from different backgrounds. I'm really happy we're all here. But it probably isn't the best idea to get someone to reshelve books when they haven't been taught how to categorize them properly. It's like I spend most of the day following one of my coworkers around and discreetly fixing what he works on. He's a great guy, very personable, but wow is it frustrating.

Thoughts on retaliation complaint by an in-house lawyer who reported a title VII employee complaint about company founder to company’s outside employment counsel? Subsequently scolded by founder for not immediately notifying founder about complaint, then founder blocked access to legal files and threatened demotion to contracts role? Is there a retaliation claim available here by the in-house lawyer?

Since moving in house from PP I’ve been astounded at how often business folks want to set up a zoom call to walk through contracts and rewrite language on the fly. Not only is it terribly inefficient, it leaves virtually no time to actually think through things, especially when dealing with long, complicated contracts for things like software purchases. Just wondering if anyone has any good tips for how to politely point out to people how bad of a process that is, assuming others face the same?
