Petroleum engineers, how much of a concern is there for reducing environmental damage in your line of work?

Many operating and service companies place a lot of emphasis on caring for the environment, but the truth is that you cannot immediately return the evil that you do to the world in a positive way.

Previously, contaminated drilling sludge was thrown into rivers or soil, now waste companies are hired to dispose of the waste properly, on the other hand, many companies have plans to replant trees.

Companies like Statoil have plans to sanitize rivers and sectors of the sea, in addition to this they work to automate and clean processes that used to pollute a lot, for example, they design underwater equipment that is in charge of operating underwater pipelines.

There is a lot but more than anything because some countries in the world put pressure on oil companies to improve their behavior toward the environment, I am sure that without these pressures these companies would not pay much attention to pollution.

Companies pay a lot of attention to the environmental issue for legal reasons, but many others have tried to change their image over time by becoming greener and more friendly to the environment, mainly the big Halliburton, and Schlumberger among others.

Just enough so that we do the bare minimum with regards to regulations

If this line of work REALLY cared about our impact to the environment there would've been a shift toward researching different energy sources. With all the money petroleum has generated, industry leaders could've led the change and still remained on top

There are certainly efforts to develop new tech and processes to decrease the impact of petroleum production, but the reality is that it's not a clean energy source and it will keep harmign communities as long as we keep using it
