Pfizer is 80% effective after the first dose and 90% effective after the second dose, according to a new real world study. Most ill effects are from the second shot. So I’d prefer not to take the second shot. Am I wrong?

Not necessarily. But aren’t the side effects all short term? If two days of feeling crappy increases your effective rate 10% seems like a good return on investment to me.

You’re dead wrong. A lot of the immunity response beyond antibody production gets fortified with the second dose, which is super important for the new variants. You can skip the second dose but once the Brazilian and the SA strains become the most prevalent in the US I certainly wouldn’t want to have missed a shot.

like

Second this. I’ve read a lot from doctors explaining how important the second dose is.

like

It’s important to get both shots so you are building up the most immunity you can. This also helps keep the virus from further mutating by increasing your odds of not getting it.

like

Get the damn shot. 24 hours of a fever > COVID. Source: me, I’ve had both.

likehelpful

Adding, second shot may be also important for duration of immunity

This is the biggest key - 80% effectiveness on the first dose is truly fantastic, but if it’s only for a month or two, then it’s really not very helpful. We now have real world data that two doses of Pfizer gets you 90% effectiveness for at least 6 months.

24 hours of crappiness is worth increased protection. For what it’s worth, I know several people who had strong reactions to the first and nothing at all to the second. I was achy and miserable after my first Pfizer dose, and if I’m even worse for the second (next week), I’ll take it over having long term issues from covid.

like

Everyone reacts differently so it doesn’t make sense to skip the second shot! I had Pfizer and I was really sick with the first dose but just had a sore arm with the second dose

like

You don’t even know if you will get ill from the second shot. You may only have a sore arm. Everyone reacts differently. Get both shots.

like

Yup. After the first Pfizer shot i had injection-site soreness for 1 night. I got the second dose last Saturday and had no side-effects at all. Actually i expected to have side effects and excuse myself from doing housework, but i felt fine so i had to do my chores.

I got the J&J vaccine last week. I had about 48 hours of chills and sweats (alternating and occasionally together, go figure), body aches, headaches, exhaustion, etc. Basically felt like the flu without the nausea. Then it was over. Much much better than getting a bad case of COVID. Just get the second shot.

like

I was way less sick with second dose. Your anxiety is talking here, but do what the medical establishment recommends. Don't overthink it!

like

The side effects are your immune system revving up. That’s why the important dose is the second one.

like

I was “sick” - fever and chills, for approximately 3 hours the day after the second shot. Just take the damn shot.

like

You are 100% wrong. Take the shot. I got a rare side effect after the first shot. I slept 15 hours, took some Advil, and came out swinging

like

Close friend just got covid after being double vaccinated. He did get it very soon after second shot though I think it’s less effective until 30 days or something but I’m the furthest from an expert.

like

The protection against severe infection is 2 weeks after the final dose.

like

Yes, you’re wrong. For all the reasons already stated plus those who cannot get vaccinated are counting on the rest of us to be as protected as possible. I’m not sure why I need to keep saying stuff like this, but I guess this is America. People apparently need to be reminded that not everything we do is solely for our own personal benefit. PS. Just got over 48 hrs of hell from Moderna dose 2 and truly grateful I am now as protected as possible from COVID and can also help protect my unvaccinated one year old.

like

I took both Pfizer shots, and didn't find the side effects any worse on the second dose.

Everyone’s going to end up having to get a new round every year
