Build your soft skills as much as your hard skills.
Not my lane, but my outside perspective is that really good planners and strategists can aspire to be like great short-sellers in the financial world. You can follow the unexpected data and come to an insight that most others don’t see (or don’t want to see). Stuff that flies in the face of conventional wisdom. You go public with what you learned aaaaand then everyone then hates you for it.
Try to keep an eye out for industry trends. Your job might be safe today, but in the future something could change with technology or regulation that changes that.
Broaden your skills.
Fragmented specialties are a thing of the past. The planner of the future can span from research to brand strategy to content and Comms
Build digital skills and know media and channel planning. Industry moving out of agency or record business model so shorter term and more project based skills will be more prized.
Build comms and data chops. When someone asks to bring in a comms/data person, be like, “nah, they slow, I got this"
