Planning a client dinner meeting where I’ll be five weeks pregnant. What tactics can I use to avoid drinking? Thinking of tipping the waiter to ask for “vodka sodas” that are just water. Other tips??

I used to tell people I had taken allergy medication earlier in the day and it wouldn’t mix well with alcohol. No one ever questioned why I wasn’t drinking alcohol after that and it was a one minute conversation and people moved on.

Tell the client you have been feeling a bit under the weather and alcohol has been upsetting your stomach. Better than the charade of even pouring a glass.

Or you could say since you have to be up so early that you want to make sure you are fresh for the morning.

Or you could say you over did it on the weekend so decided to detox during the week

If you are sharing a bottle, it is easy. I asked for a smaller pour from waiter and fake sipped it. No one is paying attention and they may think it’s being refilled

If your in Paris it’s even easier! “Ive had too many croissants and my pants are getting a bit tight” 😜

What Booz Allen said. You are not obligated to drink. Just make an excuse like you took some medication or you have been feeling under the weather and want to make sure it doesn't become full blown.

I used to say that I had a bit of a headache and didn’t want to exacerbate it and go full migraine.

One option I’ve used ... 1. Get there early and get a glass of soda water from the bar and claim that it’s a gin and tonic...and slowly sip through the dinner

like

I just told friends that i was cutting out alcohol for a little bit to be a little healthier

like

Tiny sips are the easiest way to fake it. No one will notice or question you only having 1/4 of your glass of wine (and that tiny amount of alcohol is inconsequential)

like

The vodka soda plan sounds complicated to execute. Just order one glass of wine and sip it slowly. Unless she's someone you regularly drink a lot with, she won't suspect.

Tell them you’re doing a version of Whole30

If you were in CA this would not be a question. No one would bat an eyelash if you asked for something different or non-alcoholic. 😎

I had a huge client dinner when I was about six weeks. I had them pour me a glass of white wine that I periodically pretended to sip. No one noticed. You’d be surprised how oblivious people are... you think they are noticing your actions but they rarely are :)

I loved a virgin mojito!

That’s a great idea, I’ll keep that in mind for future meetings - For this one I should have specified that it’ll be just me and the client. She’s savvy, too. 😒

We’re going to be in Paris! 😆 Saying no to wine is scandalous, even when pregnant!

Thank you all for your advice!

Medication always works - “just took antibiotics"

Do you think using “him/her” for “he/she” (ex: “her is playing” “him not here yet”) is something that kids usually grow out of? Or does it need direct intervention? I have 2 students who exhibit this error, who otherwise should be dismissed. Normally I’d just keep them on and work on it alongside other goals, but they don’t have any other goals, and with COVID, and my upcoming maternity leave in March, a more compact caseload would be advantageous.

Laid off from my marketing manager role (specializing in global events and special projects) on June 27th as retaliation for calling out a leader to HR who wanted me to “resign” in mid July. Anyone have a sense of why Deloitte got hit so hard by layoffs? I’ve heard four potential reasons:
1. Client mix / type of work
2. Leverage
3. Over hired in anticipation of growth
4. Partners didn’t want to take a haircut

Just curious! From an external perspective, seems like they cut way more than the other firms.

My monthly payments for both places is $2k, I'm charging $4.1k rent. That's a 20% return not including paying down the mortgage and the growth in the property value!
