My wife and I did a cross country road trip a few years ago. We followed a route which was like a U from the east coast to the west. Would recommend trying to hit national parks which are off the path (i.e. those away from major cities like big basin, carlsbad caverns, mesa verde etc.).
Also, if you drink, definitely would recommend putting some time in kentucky and checking out the distilleries there + jack daniels in Tennessee.
Great ideas, thanks!
This sounds interesting... following! Need to do a road trip too but I’ve got just a few days
If you happen to come through Kansas City- grab either Joes or Jack stack bbq. You will thank me later
Sleeping bear dunes is pretty far north but you're better off hugging the great lakes as you do the north pass since the area in the Midwest below it isn't very interesting to drive through. Definitely the badlands in SD.
Old Route 66 - gets you off most interstates and actually seeing the country
Are there any places in particular you want to go? One interesting place is the land between the lakes.
My favorite parks are Yellowstone, Zion, glacier, Olympic, arches. Honestly it’s going to be a wonderful trip. I’m Jealous. We had planned to do the dakotas this summer but changed plans bc of the pandemic. Was jonesing for Theodore Roosevelt, devils tower, badlands.
Drive west on a northern route and loop back through the south. You don’t want to hit winter weather while driving back.
What kinds of things do you like doing or seeing?
I couldn't find a lot of places in the Northern loop, basically between DC and Yellowstone. Thinking if I should do West VA, Kentucky, Colorado, and then go up to Yellowstone. This is at a high level, obviously.
Try to stop in National Parks! :)
If you do Zion, id do arches and Bryce too. Mesa verde is pretty close too. Great sand dunes is fun for a day.
Denver and a few hours west (on 70?) were my favorite when moving across country - lots of great mountain ski towns and as you enter the desert going west, you can hit Moab.
Heading out for this trip tomorrow!! So excited. Thanks for all the tips!
Absolutely, great stops so far. I am planning to do it all the way from Maine to Seattle so will definitely stop at these places. Good luck for the rest of the trip.
Post photos to share where you decided to go.
Keep me coming. My favorite place in the world is Yellowstone.
